Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser incorporating a tunable diffraction grating for group speed dispersion compensation. SOLUTION: A laser contains a diffraction grating 11 which is incorporated in a cavity and can be tuned. The diffraction grating 11 generates GVD(group velocity dispersion) with a wavelength detached from an optical forbidden band and GVD compensation and control of dispersion in the hollow are executed. The diffraction grating 11 operates at a transmission mode and reflection in the optical forbidden band is constituted so that it does not affect a laser condition. The diffraction grating 11 can be synchronized and GVD in the hollow can be adjusted. The diffraction grating 11 is an apodized fiber Bragg diffraction grating in the hollow of a mode lock fiber laser in a preferable example. GVD of the fiber diffraction grating can be tuned with a distortion in an axial direction.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an all-optical means applicable to re-shaping of pulse by selecting an optically nonlinear material and periodic variations, so that a re-shaped optical output pulse becomes an optical output pulse substantially limited in conversion. SOLUTION: A WDM (a system having one or more operating wavelengths) signal from a transmitter 11 is propagated downstream to an amplifier 15, and demultiplexed by a conventional demultiplexer 17. Next, the demultiplexed channels are supplied to each BSPR(Bragg soliton pulse re-shapers) 161-169. Each BSPR is adjusted to a proper wavelength. Next, the reshaped pulses are multiplexed by a conventional multiplexer 18 and propagated downstream to a using means. The BSPR to be used consists of a Bragg diffraction grating formed in a waveguide showing nonlinearity with respect to the electric field of the pulse propagated via the BSPR. Furthermore, the BSPR is selected so that the nonlinearity of the waveguide substantially averages the dispersion, a fixed distorted pulse is substantially limited in conversion.

The disclosed pulse reshaper is an all-optical pulse reshaper that comprises an optical waveguide having an effective length, the waveguide connecting the input and the output and comprising optical non-linear material, with a periodic variation of an effective refractive index of the optical waveguide. The optically non-liner material and the periodic variation are selected such that the reshaped output light pulse is a substantially transform-limited output light pulse.
