Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplifier that suppresses power dispersion. SOLUTION: A level of crosstalk of each channel is reduced considerably by inserting a loss element 60 to each path of a channel receiving the effect of power dispersion being a result of amplification. Furthermore, all separated channels receiving the effect of large amplification pass a loss device thereby similarly reducing a level of crosstalk of each channel receiving the effect of high amplification.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a facility for enhancing simultaneous transmissions of optical signals of different data rates such as, for example, OC48 and OC192 signals. SOLUTION: A stream of a first channel λi for carrying signals of different data rates and a stream of a second channel λy for carrying a signal having the same data rate are respectively supplied to inputs 31 and 32 of an asymmetrical wavelength synthesizer 130, interleaved at an output 33, and transmitted via an optical path 145. The synthesizer 130 reconfigures the signal to be processed, thereby making it ideally suited to offset problems of cladding mode when demultiplexing and multiplexing the signal streams as its advantage.

A WADM 100 comprises an optical circulator 130 and that optical circulator is optically coupled to at least two of fiber Bragg gratings(FBG) 132, 134, 136 and 138 which are interconnected in series at one port and optically coupled to a thin film filter 120 having at least two thin film filter elements 122, 124, 126 and 128 which are interconnected in series at the other port.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce optical switches, to delete signal processing of a bypass channel, to reduce the cost and to suppress deterioration of a characteristic by making a composite signal pass through a prescribed filter and bypassing signals except for the signal only when the channel is branched or substituted. SOLUTION: When an optical multiplex signal λ is received by a switch input 107, the optical multiplex signal λ is switched and is outputted to output 109 in response to a control signal 106 by local, remote, automatic and manual operations in a wavelength division/multiplex WDM filter/bypass device 100. It is inputted to a filter 104 through an optical link 111. The filter 104 branches a prescribed channel λ3, outputs the multiplex signal obtained by merging an input frequency channel λ3', inputs it to a switch 102 through an optical link 113, is switched and is outputted to 108. At the time of bypassing the filter, the control signal 106 outputs the received multiplex signal λ to 108 as it is with the switch 102 in a bypass state and an unnecessary processing is omitted.

Abstract: An optical wavelength add/drop multiplexer (WADM) is configured to aced or drop two or more signals each associated with one of a plurality of channels in a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal. The WADM comprises an optical circulator that is optically coupled at one port to two or more serially interconnected fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), and is optically coupled at another port to a thin film filter including two or more serially interconnected thi n film filter elements. Each of the two or more FBGs is matched with a thin film filter element, both arranged to be responsive to signals associated with one of th e plurality of channels. Bandwidth and dispersion properties for the FBGs are selected to permit operation of the WADM at two distinct signal data rates. To equalize associated insertion losses in embodiments of the invention arrange d to add or drop two or more signals, the FBGs are matched to the thin film fitter elements in inverse order with respect to their optical distance from the optical circulator.
