    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of nonlinearity of fibers in a long distance communication system. SOLUTION: The optical transmission system of this invention in a system employing an optical fiber optical path (especially in a system where a DWDM is used to transmit a power signal with a comparatively high level is sent to a low scattering fiber) is formed to have an optical phase conjugation unit 200 at its alternate iteration site and minimizes the presence of nonlinearity resulting from 4-wave mixing and other Kerr effect. Each fiber span 160 includes a Raman gain to realize 'absorption of negative components' along the length of the fiber 160 thereby realizing a substantially symmetrical power distribution along the length of each span. Then the presence of the symmetrical power distribution at each side face of the optical phase conjugation unit 200 can remarkably enhance the performance.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily generate a delay pulse and to supply a common broadcast channel to plural WDM receivers by respectively giving a pulse light source to a distribute delay line and M-th delay lines provided with (M-1) pieces of time slots by which an M-th delay line is delayed by M-1 bits. SOLUTION: A short wideband pulse generated in a pulse light source 101 is transmitted to a 1×N (N=M+1) power splitter 103, and N pieces of copy pulses are generated. One of the copy pulses is chirp-fluctuated in a distributed delay line 115 and a beam o light provided with a wavelength which is changes linearly with time is transmitted. Other (N-1) pieces of copy pulses are continuously and respectively delayed by one bit period. After that, whole delay line outputs are coupled in an (N×N) power coupler 131, modulated by a modulator 143 and outputted. As a result, the N-number copy pulses consisting of chirp- fluctuated light with an intermittent period, which are necessary for the plural WDN receivers, are coupled with succeeding (N-1) pieces of wideband light pulses to be outputted.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome restriction on the aspect of a capacity which a chirped pulse WDM(wavelength division multiplexing) system holds by further optically multiplexing the chirped pulse wavelength dividing signal. SOLUTION: An optical pulse with a band width exceeding 80 nm is extracted from a mode-locked (fixed) laser 202 with the speed of 36.7 MHz. The spectrum of each pulse is mapper on a time axis by being propagated through a part extending over 16 km of a single mode chirping fiber 204, and the pulse is extended. The chirped pulse is propagated to a modulator 210 through a circulator 207 and a polarization controller 208. After being amplified by a gain- flattened erbium-doped fiber power amplifier(EDFA) 212, this data flow is inputted to an optical multiplexer 214 which is used in an experiment for multiplexing a pseudo-data stream, and the bit rate of the data flow is increased by 64 times and becomes 2.35 Gb/s.

Raman gain is included in each fiber span (or in alternate fiber spans) so as to provide a "negative absorption" along the length of the fiber and thereby provide for essentially symmetrical power distribution along the length of each span, where the presence of such a symmetric power distribution on each side of an optical phase conjugator (200) has been found to significantly improve its performance.
