Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas composition-analyzing acoustic cell which fits a vacuum system and a corrosive gas environment without acoustic coupling of a converter to a cell main body and operates in a frequency range enabling measurements of various gas mixtures. SOLUTION: A gas composition-analyzing acoustic cell 10 has a converter 80 insulated from a cell main body by a metallic housing 40. A sound-absorbing sleeve 100 surrounding a main body of the converter increases a signal-noise ratio to at least 4:1. The converter used in the acoustic cell operates in a range of kiloheltz and decreases attenuations in a gas mixture to be analyzed. The cell main body uses a vacuum seal permitting the in-line use with a vacuum device.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method to improve a sol-gel processing method or its alternate method. SOLUTION: An aq. dispersion liquid of silica particles is mixed with a dialkyldialkoxy silane monomer such as dimethyl diethoxy silane under basic condition. Or, the monomer or a part of the monomer may be reacted so that a low mol.wt. polydialkyl siloxane such as polydimethyl siloxane can be added with the monomer or added as a substitute for the monomer. The addition of the monomer or low mol.wt. compd. induces gelation of silica. Silanol groups on the polydialkylsiloxane chain during growing aggregates with the silanol groups on the silica particle surface, and thereby, the particles can be fixed to the chains. The chains can form bridges between particles and/or loops on individual particles. The bridge initiates the formation of a silica particle net, and both of the bridges and loops increase hydrophobicity of the silica particles. These characteristics contribute to the gelation of silica particles independently from the surface energy of particles.
