Abstract: A low-nox burner for use in industrial furnaces and/or boilers which burn pulverized coal. The burner includes a burner tip which divides an annular pulverized coal stream into alternating fuel-rich and fuel-lean streams. The tip includes a plurality of alternating main and secondary blade members which are skewed to produce rotational movement in the streams. The main blade has a leading edge that is aligned with a radial vector extending through a center axis of the burner and a trailing edge that is tilted with respect to the radial vector in order to define a substantially planar surface between the leading and trailing edges. The secondary blade includes leading and trailing edges that are both aligned with radial vectors and defines a twisted surfaces between the edges. The secondary blade is skewed with respect to the longitudinal direction by an angle that is substantially greater than the angle at which the main blade is skewed. As a result, channels having converging cross sections are defined between the main blade and one adjacent secondary blade, and diverging channels are defined by the main blade and another adjacent secondary blade. During operation, the tip creates a fuel-rich zone surrounded by a fuel-lean zone in the combustion region.

Abstract: A dual register for controlling the flow of combustion air to a burner including an outer register formed by a mounting frame having spaced apart support plates interconnected by circumferentially spaced fixed housing members. The frame defines a plurality of inlet openings for admitting a first stream of air substantially radially from a wind box. Each inlet opening includes at least one, non-planar, oblique parallelogram shaped curved damper door for controlling the admission of combustion air into an inner region of the outer register; each damper door is configured to impart a rotational component to the first stream of air while urging it axially towards a burner region. A connector for connecting the register to the combustion air region includes a plurality of apertures for communicating a second stream of air from the wind box to an outlet region of the register. The second stream of air inhibits the development of undesirable flow patterns in the first stream of air as the first stream leaves the register. An inner register assembly provides a third stream of air for the burner that flows substantially axially from an axial inlet opening to the burner region. A seal comprising a plurality of overlapping, radial sealing members for providing a sealing interface between the register and a fuel pipe assembly extending through the register.

Abstract: A burner register assembly is provided for controlling a supply of secondary air to a furnace having a fuel and primary air supply and a secondary air supply. The burner register assembly includes a body and a pair of air valves in the body for communication with the secondary air supply to control the admission of secondary air to the register assembly. Each air valve communicates with a scroll section in the burner register body, which scroll section has a scroll passageway which spirals inwardly in the direction of secondary air flow to provide a controlled flow pattern of secondary air into the furnace. The air valve is disposed upstream of the scroll section with which it communicates and thus is well removed from the extreme environment of the opening or throat to the furnace. The burner register assembly also includes a shadow vane assembly positioned proximate to the outlet of the register, i.e., proximate to the furnace throat, to provide protection form radiant heat from the furnance. The shadow vane assembly includes a set of radially outwardly extending circumferentially arranged air foil-shaped vanes and a cooling passage associated with each vane.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus utilizing hydrogen peroxide are useful to reduce SOx and mercury (or other heavy metal) emissions from combustion flue gas streams. The methods and apparatus may further be modified to reduce NOx emissions. Continuous concentration of hydrogen peroxide to levels approaching or exceeding propellant-grade hydrogen peroxide facilitates increased system efficiency. In this manner, combustion flue gas streams can be treated for the removal of SOx and heavy metals, while isolating useful by-products streams of sulfuric acid as well as solids for the recovery of the heavy metals. Where removal of NOx emissions is included, nitric acid may also be isolated for use in fertilizer or other industrial applications.

Abstract: A low nox burner for use in a tangentially-fired furnace having a pivotally mounted burner tip attached to a fuel passage that in operation, conveys pulverized coal carried by an airstream. The burner tip includes a plurality of first and second blade members extending substantially radially from a centrally positioned, cone-shaped support member. A fuel guide surrounds and is attached to the outer ends of the first and second blade members thereby defining alternating fuel-rich and fuel-lean channels between the centrally positioned support member and inside of the fuel guide. An air guide surrounds the fuel guide and defines a passage for combustion air which is received from an air housing. The position of the air guide with respect to the fuel guide is maintained by a plurality of angled vanes which are operative to impart rotational forces to the combustion air traveling between the air guide and the fuel guide.
