Abstract: A method of assembling a valve driving mechanism, having a variable valve timing unit incorporated in a cylindrical mounting base, to a dual overhead camshaft engine. The engine has camshafts which are rotatably connected by camshaft gears. The method includes the initial step of mounting one camshaft gear, maintained at a predetermined angular position relative to the other camshaft gear attached to the other camshaft, and a lock nut on the one camshaft. Subsequent steps include first adjusting the angular position of the mounting base relative to the one camshaft gear and then the angular position of the variable valve timing unit relative to the one camshaft, and fastening the one camshaft gear to the mounting base by the lock nut and, simultaneously, the variable valve timing unit to the one camshaft.

Abstract: The invention provides a supercharged engine including a supercharger and an intercooler disposed downstream of the supercharger. The engine has a geometric compression ratio equal to or higher than 8.5. The supercharger is an internal compression type mechanical supercharger having a pressure ratio higher than 1.8 wherein the pressure ratio is defined as a ratio of a pressure at an inlet opening to a pressure at an exit opening of the supercharger. Intake valve closing timing of the engine supercharger is in the range of 50 to 100 degrees in crank angle as measured from bottom dead center, and an overlapping period during which both intake and exhaust valves open is equal to or below 17 degrees in crank angle wherein the intake valve closing timing is defined as the timing when valve lift is equal to or less than 1 millimeter, and the overlapping period is to be measured on the basis of a valve lift of zero.

The air cleaner (13; 120) is disposed at a front portion of one side half of the engine room (11; 62) and the supercharger (15; 110) is disposed in the other side half of the engine room (11; 62). A part of the inlet passage including the first and second sections is arranged to extend backward from the air cleaner (13; 120) and then to extend further along a dash panel (23; 63) forming a rear end of the engine room (11; 62) from one side half to the other side half of the engine room (11; 62) so as to reach the supercharger (15; 110).

Abstract: The IC engine (E) has a mechanically driven supercharger (3) which has an intake (5a) and a delivery duct (5b). The delivery duct (5b) is connected to the intercooler (4) which is connected to the engine inlet manifold (5c). The supercharger (3) is fitted with a bypass duct (11) and valve (15) and the intercooler is fitted with a bypass duct (9) and valve (34). When the engine is operating under light load both the supercharger and intercooler bypass valves are open. Under medium load only the supercharger bypass valve is open, and under full load, both supercharger and intercooler bypass valves are closed. USE - IC engines with mechanically driven superchargers.

Abstract: The IC engine supercharger is of mechanical type with a compression and pressure ratio exceeding 1.8, with the pressure ratio defined as the pressure ratio at the inlet aperture to that at the outlet aperture of the supercharger. The closure time point of the supercharger inlet valve lies within the region of the chamber shaft angle of 50 to 100 deg., measured from BDT. The overlapping interval, in which both the inlet and outlet valves open, is max. identical to the crankshaft angle of 17 deg. The closure time point of the inlet valve is the time of valve stroke of max. 1 mm, while the overlapping interval relates to zero valve stroke. ADVANTAGE - High geometrical engine compression ratio, retarded inlet valve closure time point, and improved supercharging.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make an engine high-powered under heavy load, by providing a first opening and closing means and second which open and close a passage, of connecting the direct upstream side directly with the direct downstream side of a supercharger, and another passage leading from the downstream side of the supercharger to a combustion chamber by-passing an intercooler respectively. CONSTITUTION:A first valve 11 and a second valve 12 are opened at the low load of an engine 1, the valve 11 is closed and the valve 12 is opened under a middle load, and both of the valve 11 and 12 are closed under a heavy load. Under a heavy load, both of a directly connected passage 8 and an intercooler bypass passage 9 are shut down so that a total amount of inlet air which is discharged from a supercharger 3 is cooled by an intercooler 4 and passes through from a surge tank 6 to branch passages 6a,... and is supplied to combus tion chambers of respective pipes 1a,.... Since a lot of intake air which is com pressed fully by the supercharger 3 is supplied, it is possible to increase intake air charging efficiency and make the engine high-powered.

Abstract: An induction system for a V-type internal combustion engine having first (1 B) and second (1A) banks of cylinders (C) respectively plurality shifted with respect to each other in the direction of alignment of the cylinders, includes intake ports (8) provided to face the space between the two banks, and a surge tank (12) for leading intake air to each intake port and arranged above one of the banks (1 B). First intake passages (11) are curvedly formed for feeding intake air from the surge tank (12) to the cylinders of the first bank (1 B), and consist of an upstream intake passage (11 a) and a downstream passage (11b). Second intake passages (10) are curvedly formed for feeding intake air from the surge tank (12) to the cylinders of the second bank (1A), and consist of an upstream intake passage (10a) and a downstream intake passage (10b). The first intake passages (11) are connected with the surge tank (12) at a point higher than the point where the second intake passages (10) are connected with the surge tank (12).
