    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an engine wherein exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) gas to each cylinder can be uniformly distributed and further a rise of intake air temperature, caused by introducing the EGR gas, can be decreased. CONSTITUTION:An EGR mechanism for supplying partly exhaust gas in exhaust ports 13, 14 as EGR gas to an intake system of each cylinder #1 to #4 is provided, and a displacement part 50 is provided in the vicinity of a contact part of an intake manifold flange 30 with a shutter valve body 26. A partitioning wall of partitioning the displacement part into two upper and lower divided chambers is provided in this displacement part 50 in a manner wherein a communication part is left between both the divided chambers. The EGR gas is supplied from the sixth EGR supply passage 56 to the lower side divided chamber of the displacement part 50 and from the upper side divided chamber of the displacement part 50 to the first branch intake passage 31 of each cylinder #1 to #4 through a communication path 54. Further, the first EGR supply passage 41 is parallelly arranged to an oil supply passage 4 to cool the EGR gas by oil.

CONSTITUTION:A first - a fourth independent exhaust passages 17-20 are respectively curvedly arranged outside the exhaust side of an engine CE, so as to form a nearly cage-like space part 25 between them and the engine main body CE. These independent exhaust passages 17-20 are collected to an exhaust collecting part 21 on the lower stream of the curved part, and this exhaust collecting part 21 is connected to a collective exhaust passage 22. The collective exhaust passage 22 is arranged so as to pass through the nearly cage-like space part 25, and a catalytic converter 23 interposed in the collective exhaust passage 22 is arranged in the space part 25 so as to improve purifying factor of exhaust gas.

CONSTITUTION: While the closing timing of the intake valves 5, 6 of an engine is regarded as low speed type timing to improve filling efficiency in a low speed range, the opening timing of exhaust valves 7, 8 is regarded as high speed type timing suitable for accelerating exhaust in a high speed range so that a period from exhaust valve opening timing to an exhaust bottom dead center is increased more than 10 degrees at an crank angle, larger than a period from an intake bottom dead center to intake valve closing timing. Further, turbulent flow strength raising means provided with a first intake port 3 for generating eddy current and a second intake port 4 closed in the low speed range is arranged in an engine and hereby, a combustion period is shortened in the low speed range, and exhaust energy can be sufficiently applied to a piston before the exhaust valves 7, 8 as the high speed type timing are opened.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a combustion chamber structure for a lean burn engine with which ignitability of air-fuel mixture can be improved sufficiently at the time of lean burning. CONSTITUTION:A ceiling 23 of a combustion chamber 8 is formed to be a bent roof having first and second inclined parts 24, 25. Intake valves 4, 5 are arranged on the side of the first inclined part 24, while exhaust valves 12, 13 are arranged on the side of the second inclined part 25. A first ignition plug 10 is arranged at a substantially center part of the ceiling 23. A bottom 24a of the first inclined part 24 is affset-arranged upper than a bottom 25a of the second inclined part 25. A second ignition plug 11 is arranged on a combustion chamber side wall 27 which is formed on the side of the intake valve by the offset arrangement. A projection 29 projected upward is formed on a specified portion of a top of a piston 9 on the side of the exhaust valve. The projection 29 approaches a lower surface of the second inclined part 25 and determines the combustion chamber 8 only on the side of the intake valve at a top dead center.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve anit-pitching property of a valve device by combining a stem containing specified ingredients and quenched with a contact member which is carburized, nitrided, annealed and shot-peened. CONSTITUTION:A valve stem 4a contains 0.35-0.55weight% of C, 1.0-3.5weight% of Si, 0.6 or less weight% of Mn, 7.5-12.0weight% of Cr, and the rest of iron and quenched. A plunger 3a of an HLA(hydro lash adjuster) 3 contains 0.1-0.3weight% of C, 0.05-0.5weight % of Si, 0.3-1.8weight% of Mn, 2.5 or less weight% of Ni, 0.3-1.5weight% of Cr, 0.5 or less weight% of Mo, and the rest of iron and carburized, nitrided, quenched, annealed, and shot-peened. Nitrogen dissolved in the solid by the carburizing, nitriding and annealing improves the softening resistance of the plunger 3a and also improves anti-adhesion property of the plunger 3a relative to the mating member or the valve stem 4a. Therefore, anti-pitching property of both members is improved.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce in balance a tensile residual stress at the surface of a cam so as to restrain pitching or the like in a cam nose by re-fusing the surface of the cam, and applying a surface process to the surface of the cam after grinding so as to generate a compression residual stress therein to cancel these stresses each other. CONSTITUTION:In manufacturing, a cam shaft material 1 made of cast iron is fused, and the surface of a cam is cutting worked, followed by a degreasing treatment. After adhesion of an alloy powder sheet 2 to the surface of the cam, the cam shaft material 1 is heated and dewaxed. The cam shaft material 1 is pre-heated, and an abrasion resistant high alloy chill layer 12 is formed by thermal energy of a beam 3 of TIG welding. The abrasion resistant high alloy chill layer 12a is formed by grinding after a high alloy re-fusion process, and then the surface of the layer 12a is hardened by shot peening. Therefore, a compression residual stress can be generated in a cam nose after the shot peening, and further, a surface smoothing effect can be obtained.

In addition, a swirl tilt angle γ of the swirl flow to be formed in the combustion chamber 6 is set in a range of 35 deg. to 55 deg..

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To secure ignitability during cold time so as to reduce a discharge rate of HC by providing a means which generates an inner-cylinder gas flow having a large swirl component in a circumferential direction within a low load area when an engine temperature is low, and generates the inner-cylinder gas flow having a large tumble component the in axial direction of a cylinder when an engine temperature is high. CONSTITUTION:A shutter valve 10 on a primary side is controlled to be fully closed with its cutout 15 directed down ward, and a shutter valve 11 on a secondary side is controlled to be fully closed, during low load time including idling and cold time when an engine temperature does not reach a specified level. In such a condition intake air is guided to flow on the bottom wall side of an independent intake passage 8 on the primary side while passing the cutout 15 of the primary side shutter valve 10. Then it bypasses the opening of an intake port 2 on the primary side from its side portion and allowed to flow into a combustion chamber 1 in form of a large flow in a circumferential direction. Swirl is generated in the combustion chamber 1, accordingly. Afterburning is generated in the exhaust system due to dense air-fuel mixture, and HC generation is suppressed.
