Abstract: 6927. McClintock, J. N. March 25, A.D. 1902, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Sewage and foul waters, treating; bacteriological processes; filtering.-In a filter for domestic purposes, but applicable also for the purification of water for villages, cities, &c., and in a modification, for the bacteriological treatment of sewage, a septic tank is combined with filtering and collecting chambers, means being provided for automatically controlling the supply of impure water to the septic tank and the overflow from the latter to the filter chambers, and for ventilating the apparatus. The impure water is supplied through the inlet pipe a to the septic tank A, Fig. 1, which is connected to two separate filter beds B of coke, sand, &c. by weirs d. An arrangement of floats c in the collecting tanks or chambers C operates, through rokshafts and connecting-arms, the gates or valves g of the weirs d, in such a manner that the filter beds are supplied alternately with water, thus encouraging bacterial growth. The water from the collecting-chambers C is discharged through siphons D upon another filter bed E and thence to the collecting-chamber F. A float f in the chamber F controls by means of the rod 30 and lever 32 the inlet valve b of the septic tank. Air is supplied to the apparatus by the pipes h, l, 40, and discharged through the pipe i by the filling of the chambers C, check valves being arranged in the pipes to allow the air to pass in one direction only. For treating sewage, the apparatus shown in Fig. 4 is employed. In this, three septic tanks A, A', A' are connected by weirs 70, 71, the sewage being admitted by the conduit 90. The gates or valves g, g admitting to the filter beds B, B' are alternately opened or closed as in the apparatus described above. Sludge from the tanks A, A', A is discharged by the pipe 85.
