Abstract: A patient programmer for facilitating patient control over an implanted medical device, such as an implanted spinal cord stimulator or the like, is disclosed. A programmer in accordance with the present invention is a portable, light-weight, easy to use patient programmer. The programmer enables a patient to control the operation of his or her implanted device outside of a clinical setting. The programmer incorporates features which ensure that users of varying ages, education levels, dexterity levels, physical and mental health will be able to safely control the operation of their implanted devices, within predefined limits established by a physician or clinician. Circuitry is provided for avoiding battery depletion and/or undesired programmer/implanted device communication in the event that the programmer's key is accidentally depressed (for example, due to being jammed into a purse or pocket) or is depressed repeatedly or continuously over an extended period of time. The programmer provides tactile, audible, and visible feedback to the user to convey information regarding the proper (or improper) operation of the programmer and the implanted device. In one embodiment, the device includes a beeper and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to indicate, for example, that a desired programming function has been successful or unsuccessful.

Abstract: A keyboard-controlled microprocessor-based tissue stimulator includes pulse output circuits which deliver output pulses at times commanded by, and having amplitudes commanded by, a microprocessor-controller. A microprocessor operates in response to user command on keyboard switches. Commands include a stop command which not only terminates output pulses but resets amplitudes to a safe value so that subsequent restarting will not result in production of uncomfortably high output signal levels. The stop switch is prominently located on the tissue stimulator housing to permit the user to stop operation very quickly in an emergency situation. Keyboard switches are provided for increasing and decreasing output amplitude, and the microprocessorcontroller responds to those commands by continuously changing output amplitude by predetermined small increments for as long as the switch remains depressed, thus permitting the user to make smooth and precise adjustments for optimum results. A further keyboard switch commands the microprocessor-controller to switch to an alternate mode, for example, a low rate burst mode.

Abstract: A tissue stimulator of the type which provides short intervals of stimulation followed by longer intervals of rest is provided with a fail-safe system for turning off the stimulator if the stimulation interval exceeds a predetermined maximum interval. A timer times each "on" interval. If the "on" interval exceeds the predetermined maximum, the timer times out and shuts off stimulation.

Abstract: The keyboard-controlled tissue stimulator based on a microprocessor has pulse output circuits which emit output pulses at times and with amplitudes pre-determined by a microprocessor control arrangement. A microprocessor operates on the basis of user commands input via keys. The commands comprise a stop order which not only terminates the output pulses but also resets the amplitudes to a safe value, so that generation of unpleasantly high output signal levels is avoided on subsequent renewed starting. The OUT key producing the stop order is sited at a conspicuous point on the tissue stimulator housing, so that the user can stop operation very quickly in an emergency. Furthermore, keys for increasing and reducing the output amplitude are provided, and the microprocessor control arrangement responds to these commands in such a way that it changes the output amplitude continuously by pre-determined small increments for as long as the key is pressed. This permits the user to make gentle and accurate adjustments for optimum results. Another key orders the microprocessor control arrangement to switch over to another operation mode, for example pulse surge mode at a low rate.
