Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide efficient message routing when using server pools.
SOLUTION: A system attempts to ensure high availability of servers by enabling clients to specify a domain name for the server pool even though the server pool comprises multiple servers, each having a distinct name. When a client initiates a session by using the server pool's domain name, the system may select an available server with a different name and routes a request and subsequent messages during the session to the selected server. The system may select a server form the pool having the lowest load, may also indicate servers that subsequent messages in the session are to transit and subsequent messages may then be routed to indicated servers to enable applications on the indicated servers to take actions based on the messages and the direction of the messages.

SOLUTION: By this method, a server can delay distribution of a resource to a request from a client. When the client requests a function requiring a server resource, the server receives the request from the clients to confirm it, while the client is prevented from using the requested function until further notification is sent from the server. Afterward, the server distributes the resource necessary for supporting a request from the client only when the resource becomes available. Until then, the server maintains communication session without supporting the request. The client can omits repeating of the request if the server cannot satisfy the request instantly. Abstract: A method and mechanism for rapidly freeing storage space allocated to any logical portion of a file. An application program (30) provides the file system (28) with information indicating a block of logical data to free. Also, a client need not repeat its request if the server cannot immediately satisfy it; instead, the server accepts the request and then later begins to support it when adequate resources become available.
