    Abstract: Module assembly has at least two spacer frame elements (12) each having opposed spaced faces surrounding an opening (22), with each face having an inner peripheral portion and an adjacent outer peripheral portion. A porous membrane (14) may be bonded to one inner peripheral surface of each frame element (12) or to each inner peripheral surface of one frame element. The outer peripheral surface of an adjacent frame element, on a face which does not carry a membrane on its adjacent inner peripheral surface, is bonded to the outer peripheral surface on the face of a frame carrying a membrane to form a continuous bond between the outer peripheral surfaces of the spacer frames, and to define a compartment between membranes through which a fluid may flow from an inlet to an outlet provided in one of the support frames. A membrane support frame carrying a membrane on a face not adjacent another frame can have an alternative device (16) bonded to the periphery to support the membrane.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane module assembly to be used in a fluid separation method including a nonporous membrane by which a fluid to be separated is not leaked to the outside, the membrane is hardly released, the fluid is not leaked from a membrane bonding part, and the effective membrane area is maximized. SOLUTION: A nonporous ion-exchange membrane 14 is preferably bonded to a spacer 12 by vibrational welding. Each membrane-spacer assembly is bonded to the adjacent membrane-spacer assembly with an open channel formed between the membranes. An inner peripheral surface 42 is provided along the whole periphery of the open channel 43 on the rear face of the spacer 12, and an outer peripheral surface 44 adjacent to the inner peripheral surface 42 is laterally extended toward the periphery of the spacer. The outer peripheral surface 44 is raised from the inner peripheral surface 42 to store the membrane to be bonded in the region of the inner peripheral surface.
