Abstract: PURPOSE:To quantitatively and advantageously obtain the subject compound which is a raw material for resins, medicines, agricultural chemicals or material for optical elements without troublesome operation by using phosgene readily available at a low cost with maleamic acid in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Phosgene is reacted with maleamic acid expressed by formula I [n is 1 or 2; Q is unsubstituted or substituted aryl, alkyl or cycloalkyl when n is 1 and unsubstituted or substituted phenylene, naphthylene or bifunctional organic group expressed by formula II or III (X is -O-, -S-, -S-S-, -SO2-, etc.) when n is 2] in the presence of a catalyst in an organic solvent, such as benzene, preferably at 20-80 deg.C to afford a compound expressed by formula IV. The phosgene is used at 1 molar ratio when n in the compound expressed by formula I is 1 and a slight excess over 2 molar ratio when n is 2. Furthermore, imidazole, dimethylformamide, etc., are preferred as the catalyst.
