Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a new bisurea compound useful for producing a 1,3-dialkyl-2- imidazolidinone useful as an aprotic polar solvent and an intermediate for medicines and agricultural chemicals. CONSTITUTION: This bisurea compound of formula I (R is an alkyl). The compound is obtained by reacting an N,N',N"trialkyldiethylenetriamine of formula II with urea preferably at 100-155 deg.C, especially 120-145 deg.C. A 1,3-dialkyl-2- imidazolidinone of formula III can be obtained by thermally decomposing (especially preferably at 210-240 deg.C) the compound of formula I. The compound of formula II as a raw material is a by-product in producing an N,N'- dialkylethylenediamine from dichloroethane and an alkylamine in reaction for obtaining the compound of formula III from the N,N'-dialkylethylenediamine and urea. The compound has no main use, development of the use has been required and the compound is effectively utilized by this method.

It is preferred that the reaction is effected in the presence of no solvent or in an alcohol same as that formed as a by-product during the reaction and after the target product is isolated, the recovered solvent is reused.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the novel compound presenting excellent solvent effect, also excellent in oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, an aprotic polar solvent useful as a solvent for high-molecular compounds or organic reactions. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I (R is a 1-8C alkyl), e.g., 1,3,6- trimethylhexahydro-1,3,6-triazocin-2-one. The compound of the formula I is obtained by reaction between (A) a compound of the formula II prepared, in advance, by reaction of a 1,2-dihalogenoethane with an amine of formula R-NH2 and (B) urea; specifically, a urea intermediate is formed at >=160 deg.C in the initial reaction, and the subsequent decomposition of the urea intermediate is conducted at a raised temperature of >=200 deg.C; and the molar ratio A/B is set at 1.2 to 1.7 in this reaction.

An example of the salicylic acid derivative is 4-(n- octyloxycarbonylamino)salicylic acid. The derivative is useful as an electron accepting compound (color developing agent) for recording materials such as heat-sensitive or pressure-sensitive recording materials, etc.
