Abstract: Adipic acid is prepared by reacting a cyclohexane solution containing cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone with nitrogen tetroxide in an amount of from 15 to 20% by weight of the mixture at 30 DEG to 40 DEG C. in the presence of vanadium pentoxide or of a metavanadate of an alkali metal or ammonia. The nitric oxide produced as by-product may be oxidized with air to nitrogen tetroxide which may be recycled or the oxidation of the cyclohexane solution may be effected in the presence of oxygen to oxidize the nitric oxide as it is formed. The cyclohexane solution may be prepared by the oxidation of cyclohexane with air and that cyclohexane solution remaining after removal of adipic acid from the nitrogen tetroxide oxidation reaction product can be recycled to this air oxidation.

Abstract: Dodecanoic acid is prepared by oxidizing cyclododecane with a mixture of mono- and di-meric nitrogen dioxide. Oxygen may be present, and an increase in the monomeric concentration increases the reaction rate and an increase in the dimeric concentration increases the yield. Catalysts comprising vanadium compounds such as ammonium metavanadate with silica gel may be present. The acid is separated by precipitation on adding an organic solvent, e.g. petroleum ether, ligroin, chloroform or carbon tetrachloride to the reaction product or alternatively the reaction may be carried out in solvents such as chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.
