Abstract: A method of estimating signal quality, the method including a) taking a plurality of complex samples of a decoded signal at its symbol rate for a plurality of slots, for each of the slots b) partitioning the samples into a plurality of partitioned sample sets, for each of the partitioned sample sets c) deriving data symbols from the samples, d) re-encoding the data symbols into a re-encoded symbol set, e) forming a vector of length L that is orthogonal to a set of vectors formed from L consecutive samples of the re-encoded symbol set, where L is an integer less than or equal to the number of samples in the partitioned set, and f) forming an estimate of the singal quality from the pluarlity of complex samples for the plurality of slots using at least one of the orthogonal vectos.

Abstract: In a radio communication system a method of directing a communicating unit to utilise a communication resource includes the step of: informing a receiving communication unit, on a first channel or frequency, of at least one alternative channel or frequency (200) that is to be used for a communication if the first channel or frequency is used for a call. The at least one alternative frequency or channel (200) includes a single favourite frequency or channel (210) and a cyclically transmitted list of secondary frequencies or channels (212). This mechanism allows a base transceiver station (BTS) to indicate to a fleet of mobile stations (MSs) that are serviced by the BTS, a set of frequencies that will be used in the event that the current monitoring frequency ceases to remain available.

Abstract: A self-organising wireless communication system (10) includes a plurality of wireless serving communication units (24-30) serving a plurality of mobile stations (12-16) with a limited communication resource (18-22). At least one wireless serving communication unit (24-30) includes a transmitter transmitting a wireless transmission message (190) including at least a yoohoo message portion (198). The yoohoo message portion (198) identifies whether transmissions from other wireless serving communication units can be received by the at least one wireless serving communication unit (24-30). This enables several BTSs or repeaters to share simultaneously a single frequency and to indicate to their respective fleets of MS's which frequency they are currently permitted to use and need to monitor for their transmissions. This is achieved partly through the concept of a 'map' of other transmissions to allow access and coordination. It also allows collisions to be detected and resolved when they are likely to occur.

Abstract: A method of estimating signal quality includes taking complex samples 110 of a decoded signal, mapping 130 each of the samples by expressing its phase modulo f /n where n is an integer equal to the number of points in the constellation divided by 2 (where all the constellation points have the same amplitude) and rotating 140 each of the modulo f /n samples by - f /2n. For example, for quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) where n=2, each of the samples is mapped to the upper right QPSK quadrant. The ratio 150 of the imaginary part of each of the rotated samples to its real part is then taken to provide an instantaneous square root of an interference to signal (I/C) ratio. A variance associated with several I/C ratios is calculated 170 to provide an estimate of the signal quality. Application is to TETRA radio communication systems.
