    Abstract: A closeable communication device (102), such as a cellular telephone, has a housing (105), an input device, such as a button (208), carried on the housing (105), and a controller (304) disposed in the housing (105) and coupled to the button (208). The housing (105) is movable between a closed position (200) and an opened position (114). The button (208) is accessible in the closed position (200). The controller (304) is configured to employ one or more features that increase the usability of the device (102) in the closed position (200). For example, the controller (304) answers an incoming call to the device (102) upon opening of the housing (105) and, alternatively, disables answering of the incoming call upon opening of the housing (105) during actuation of the button (208) so as to allow, for example, opening of the device (102) to view caller identification information without answering the call.

    Abstract: A radiotelephone (100) includes a main battery (101) and is operable on a first communication system. A supplemental module (102) may be attached to the radiotelephone. The supplemental module may include a second RF communication circuit for communicating with a second communication system. This allows the user to configure the radiotelephone for communication with currently available systems. The supplemental module may further include an auxiliary battery for providing extended battery operation. The radiotelephone includes a discharging and charging circuit (310) to control the discharge and charge of the auxiliary and main batteries in a way that allows uninterrupted, continuous operation of the radiotelephone.

    Abstract: Upon detecting the movement of a radio telephone a user is notified of an event if the phone has not been moved for a predetermined period of time. For example if a message is received and it is determined that no acceleration has occurred in the x or y directions for a predetermined period of time since receipt of the message, the phone may notify the user of the message via the speaker of vibrator when the phone is moved. An arrangement for assigning motion patterns of the phone to input characters or select functions is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A multimode communication device 160 operates in autonomous communication systems 104, 106 which are independent communication systems which have little or no intersystem communication and have no provision for hand off between the systems. The systems may include satellite systems and terrestrial systems and may operate in different frequency ranges. A first transceiver 124 is coupled to an antenna 122 for communication with a first autonomous communication system 104 using the required protocol and frequency and a second transceiver 126 is similarly coupled to the antenna 122 for communication with a second autonomous communication system 106. Some communication resources, eg. antenna 122, synthesizer 132 etc., are shared to reduce cost. Transceiver 126 may be in a detachable module 148 which may comprise a SIM card. The device 160 establishes communication on a first system 104 and in response to a request to communicate on a second system 106, deactivates the first communication and establishes communication on the second system 106. This communication system changeover may involve registering with the second system 106. The request may originate at the device 160 or at the second communication system 106 and may correspond to a scheduled communication time for communication on the second system 106. The device 160 may try to register with as many active systems as possible, establish priority of use for registered systems and inform communication systems of when it is unavailable (figs. 2, 4, 5, 6).
