Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a satellite type cellular communication system to be used for providing an emergency service to a subscriber unit positioned at any place on the earth. SOLUTION: The surface of the earth is divided into fixed areas and an emergency code is assigned to the fixed area one by one. When a subscriber unit 150 moves on the surface of the earth, based on the current position of subscriber unit, a satellite type cellular communication system 100 updates the emergency code stored in the subscriber unit 150 as needed. While using the stored emergency code, the subscriber unit 150 discriminates the timing for a user to request the emergency service and corresponding to that timing, the priority of calls is determined.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the method and the device by which a 1st satellite system hands off tentatively a communication link from a 2nd satellite system. SOLUTION: The method and the device handing off communication between a primary satellite system and a substitute satellite system decides (602) the case that a hand-off condition is in existence with respect to the primary satellite system. A substitute satellite having a coverage area in which a substitute communication link is served is decided (604, 609). Then handing off between the primary satellite system and the substitute satellite system is executed (606). When the hand-off condition is relaxed (610), the handing off to the primary satellite system is executed again and the usual operation is restarted (600).

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method by which a communication network can establish and maintain a communication link between two subscribers' units different in communication protocol and changing a protocol without interrupting a link, if necessary. SOLUTION: Transmission/terminal units 32, 34, 36 and 38 communicate by way of a network which is equipped with satellites 46, 52 and 50 and gateways 44 and 48, and decide a common protocol of the highest priority order from each of the units 32, 34, 36 and 38 after comparison of reception/list of a list added with the priority order by a user of the protocol. When there is a common protocol, the network establishes the link between units using the common protocol and excludes the gateways 44 and 48. When there is no common protocol, the network selects a protocol of the highest priority order in respective lists as a transmission/terminal protocol. When a transmission protocol consumes much resources, the network establishes the link and excludes translation/terminal gateways 44 and 48 between protocols in the transmission gateway.

SOLUTION: In this space communication system 10, a first satellite 22 circulates the earth at a first altitude and a second satellite 20 is connected to the first satellite 22 through an electric communication link and circulates the earth at a second altitude different from the first altitude. The first satellite 22 and the second satellite 20 communicate the satellite control information with each other when the second satellite 20 is present in the visual field of the first satellite 22. In the case that the plural second satellites 20 are present, a cross link among the second satellites use all utilizable band widths and audio and data information is transferred with each other.

Each channel (22) is divided into time slots. Each time slot is allocated to a user based on the user's request (303) for time slots and the availability of time slots. If time slots are available, then the system (10) will inform the user (87) and allocate the time slot to the user (87, 305). If there are no available time slots, then the system (10) will inform the user (87) that no time slots are available and access to the system's channel is denied. The user (87) will continue to request access (303) to the system (10) as long as the user has data packets to send.

Abstract: Originating and terminating units (32, 36) communicate through a network (22) containing satellites (46, 50, 52) and gateways (44, 48). The network (22) receives user-prioritized lists (62) of protocols from the respective units (32, 36). The network (22) compares the lists (62) to determine the highest-priority common protocol. If a common protocol exists, the network (22) establishes a link between the units (32, 36) utilizing the common protocol and excluding the gateways (44, 48). If a common protocol does not exist, the network (22) selects as originating and terminating protocols the highest-priority protocols in the respective lists (62). If the originating protocol consumes a greater number of resources, the network (22) establishes the link, translating between protocols in an originating gateway (44) and excluding a terminating gateway (48). Otherwise, the network (22) establishes the link, translating in the terminating gateway (48) and excluding the originating gateway (44).

Abstract: In a packet data communication system a subscriber unit sends a request for use of a channel indicating the number of data packets to be transmitted. A system controller allocates time slots of a channel for at least some of the data packets. After transmission the subscriber unit repeats the request indicating the number of any remaining data packets, until all data packets have been transmitted. In a satellite telecommunication system the subscriber unit 30,32 assembles the data packets, determines the number it wants to transmit and sends the request message to a satellite 20. The satellite responds with either a request denied message or a request allowed message indicating the available time slots.
