By rotating a moveable element (104), a function, letter, or number is selected. The moveable element (104) is then moved in another direction to enter the selected item. The function, letter, or number can be displayed on a display (106), announced with a synthesized voice, or displayed and announced.

Abstract: The portable communication device includes a transmitter (301) for sending out radio telephone signals. It also includes a receiver (301) for receiving radio telephone signals. A processor (303) controls the communication device. A memory (305) stores data. The portable device also has an elongate housing. The housing includes a first housing part (102) adapted to receive the portable communication device circuitry. A second housing part (104) surrounds the first part (102) and is rotatable relative to the first part (102), so as to select a predetermined function stored in the memory. The second housing part (104) is arranged to slide along a longitudinal axis which extends through the device housing so as to initiate the selected function.
