SOLUTION: The communication system of this application is provided with a transmission station that applies time multiplexing to a user message with other message and with a reception station that re-inserts different delay to compensate inter-symbol interference. Each user inputs digital signals 112, 122 and 132 to corresponding equalizer synchronous word blocks 110, 120 and 130. A TDMA controller 140 applies time-multiplex to each user message with other user message to generate a TDMA signal 145. A transmitter 150 transmits the signal 145. A received TDMA signal 225 received by a receiver 220 is applied to a data buffer 230 and a TDMA controller 240. The controller 240 selects a specific user slot on the basis of the signal 225. An equalizer 250 applies time delay spread equalization to a stored user message 235 to output data of a specific user.

    Abstract: An improved noise suppression system (400) which performs speech quality enhancement upon speech-plus-noise signal available at the input (205) to generate a clean speech signal at the output (265) by spectral gain modification. The noise suppression system includes a background noise estimator (420) which generates and stores an estimate of the background noise power spectral density based upon pre-processed speech (215), as determined by the detected minima of the post-processed speech energy level. This post-processed speech (255) may be obtained directly from the output of the noise supression system, or may be simulated by multiplying the pre-processed speech energy (225) by the channel gain values of the modification signal (245). The channel gain controller (240) produces these individual channel gain values for application to both the channel gain modifier (250) and the background noise estimator (420). Each individual channel gain value is selected as a function of (a) the channel number, (b) the current channel SNR estimate, and (c) the overall average background noise level. The technique of implementing post-processed signal to generate the background noise estimate (325) provides a more accurate measurement of the background noise energy since it is based upon much cleaner speech signal. As a result, the present invention performs acoustic noise suppression in high ambient noise backgrounds with significantly less voice quality degradation.

A transmitting station (100) formats one or more equalizer synchronization words with a first user's data word, time-multiplexes this formatted user message with at least one other user message, and transmits the combined signal. The receiving station (200) receives the transmitted TDMA signal in a receiver (220), de-multiplexes the first user message from the other user messages in the TDMA controller (240), and the equalizer (250) equalizes the time delay spread characteristics of the data word portion of the first user message (or a stored version of such) in response to this de-multiplexing. Performing the adaptive equalization process more than once per user time slot provides an even higher data throughput for the system. Storing the first user message in a data buffer (230) permits the adaptive equalization process to be performed in non-real time, thereby lowering the required signal processing data rate in any particular receiver.
