Abstract: A monitoring module (6) in the control apparatus receives information from base transceiver stations under control of a mobile switching center relating to the behavior of those mobile stations operating in the zone and registered with these stations, while a classification module (8) classifies monitored mobile stations into groups according to their similar behavior over time. The group information is fed to a store (9) and a receiver module (10) receives a signal informing the mobile switching center that a request has been made from a portable mobile station to receive or transmit data. The identity of the mobile station is transferred from the receiver module to a group matching and prediction module (11), determining the best matching group for the mobile station and feeding prediction trajectory information to a data transmission module (12), generating control signals. An independent claim is included for a method of controlling transmission of data between base and mobile stations.

Abstract: Optimum route selection for data packets is assisted by markers (or pheromones) deposited at network nodes (1-8) by preceding packets. An acknowledgement message retracing its steps through previously visited nodes (1-8) enhances a confidence level of the deposited pheromone if the packet delivery met its desired transmission constraints, such as cost or quality of service. The following packets can then make informed decisions as to their subsequent route to a particular destination by noting the confidence levels of the deposited pheromones. Each packet is given some intelligence by attaching a software agent thereto. The invention has the advantages of allowing a packet to explore optimum routes in a network whilst it is being delivered, therefore conserving network capacity, and also permitting a data packet to select the best compromise between the delivery time and payload.
