Abstract:
A portable radio (104) initiates a communication link using a synchronous protocol format. A base station (102) generates a synchronization pattern (200) which includes a marker. The marker (202) includes a generic code that invites portables to make link requests. The portable radio (104) synchronizes to the marker (202) and recognizes the generic code that indicates base availability. The portable radio (104) sends a link request in response to the generic code to initiate the communication link, and the base station (102) grants a link in order to establish the communication link.
Abstract:
An apparatus completes inbound calls for portable communication units (120) in a wireless communication system comprising portable communication units (120) and fixed communication units (102). The fixed communication unit (102) provides wireless communications over a limited coverage area (108, 110, 112) and provides coupling to a telephone system (114). The fixed communication unit (102) has at least one wireless transmission channel carrying call set-up signaling in a first mode and user communications in a second mode. The fixed communication unit (102) generates (708) more than one sequence of periodic call set-up polls on a wireless transmission channel for polling a portable communication unit (120) having an inbound call, wherein the sequence coexists with other sequences of periodic call set-up polls being generated concurrently on the same wireless transmission channel.
Abstract:
A communication system (100) is designed that reduces co-channel interference when heterogeneous users (101-104) are sharing spectrum. The system design enables a plurality of pairs of users to communicate their channel utilization time periods by using the durations and start or stop times of certain transmissions to signal the start times and durations of later transmissions. Other system users using possibly different communications protocols and different modulation technologies can measure the durations of received transmissions and to infer channel usage based on these durations.
Abstract:
Remote units within a first communication system ( 121 ) utilizes frequencies (channels) from a second communication system ( 120 ) when placing a call. When a first remote unit ( 106 ) wants to call a second remote unit ( 107 ) using the channels, the first remote unit sends a base station ( 103 ) a list of top N traffic channel blocks from the second communication system along with the identity of the second remote unit. The base station then pages the second remote unit using a signaling channel reserved by second system. The second remote unit responds to the page with its list of best traffic channel blocks/chunks. The base station then picks the best overlap of idle channels from the list received by the remote units, and sends the list to the remote units instructing them use those traffic channels. Once the remote units receive the available channels, they can begin their call.

A method of registration of a portable unit that may be utilized in a communication system that comprises a network controller, having a data base for storing portable identification numbers, a base station, and a portable unit, wherein a subscriber communicates to the network controller a first information set which comprises subscriber qualifying information, the portable identification number, and a key code that has been entered into the portable (100), and wherein the subscriber has entered a link identification number for over-the-air registration into a memory within the portable unit (102).
