Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save power by utilizing a non-CDMA communication path and to send emergency communication onto a CDMA communication path.
SOLUTION: A portable communication device 100 also includes a controller 112 coupled to first transceiver circuitry 104 and second transceiver circuitry 116 for providing a deregistration message to the second transceiver circuitry 116 for transmission therefrom in response to determining that the portable communication device 100 is within signal coverage of the first communication path, activating the first transceiver circuitry 104 to send and receive signals on the first communication path, deactivating the second transceiver circuitry 116, and thereafter activating the second transceiver circuitry 116 at times separated by a predetermined time interval to monitor one or more housekeeping channels of the second communication path.

In addition the controller (113) creates a plurality of control signals used to control parts of the transceiver (119) and which are time dependent upon the second reference signal (203). Therefore, the adjusting of the variable delay of the second signal subsequently adjusts the plurality of control signals.

To maximize the trade-off between voice quality and frequency of the scan, the base station (102) indicates to the mobile station (106) the period between other frequency scans via messaging. To ensure compatibility, this method can be negotiated via known service configuration negotiation techniques.
