    Abstract: A first mobile device (300) is capable of communication with a second mobile device on a communication system employing an unsynchronised timing structure (e.g. Direct Mode Operation (DMO) in a TETRA system). The mobile device (300) comprises a signal processing function (308) coupled to a timer function (318), such that the signal processor function (308) is configured to detect a frame-type of a transmission from the second mobile device and adapt a timing parameter of the timer function (318) in response thereto in order to acquire synchronisation. A method of acquiring synchronisation is also provided. In this manner, by detecting a frame type such as a synchronisation transmission frame/burst, a wireless mobile device is able to synchronise to another mobile device in an unsynchronised communication system using lower power consumption and a lower processor bandwidth.

    Abstract: A cellular communication system (100) comprises at least one central station (101) and a plurality of remote units (105-111) which may communicate in direct mode with each other without involving the central station. The remote units (105-111) may also communicate in trunked mode via the central station. The communication system (100) comprises a control remote unit (113) which comprises a direct mode controller (209) for entering a direct mode controller mode. In this mode, the direct mode controller (209) controls a transmitter (205) to transmit direct mode control messages to the other remote units (105-111). The direct mode control messages comprise information associated with radio channels for direct mode communication including for example synchronisation information, radio channel allocation information, radio channel availability information etc. The information may facilitate the operation of the remote units (105-111) and improve direct mode performance. The invention is suitable e.g. for a TETRA communication system.
