    Abstract: A method for construction and communication of data for charging and billing for network access and service transactions, which comprises the step of generating ( 100 ) a Charging Data Record (CDR) for each connection of a User Equipment (UE) a telecomunication network. Service providing servers accessed by the UE generate in two steps Event Detail Records (EDRs): first step ( 104 ) is tagging each event caused by a user of said UE, second step ( 106 ) is assigning transaction ID and transaction details to said tag. Further the CDR and the EDR are collated ( 108 ) with the tags to create a Session Detail Record (SDR). The SDR is sent ( 118 ) to a mediation and routing engine. The mediation and routing engine processes ( 120 ) the SDR to the required format. Then the SDR is forwarded ( 122 ) to a rating engine, which expands ( 124 ) said tags, calculates and adds charges ( 126 ). Then said SDR is forwarded ( 128 ) to a billing server for generating ( 130 ) a unified bill and finally the unified bill is sent ( 132 ) to the user of the UE.

    Abstract: Transmission of voice over internet protocol is achieved in a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) by using a hybrid mode of attach whereby the speech bearer path from a mobile phone (1) is transported to the network controller (4) in circuit-switched mode and from thereonwards in packet mode. The control signalling from the mobile phone (1) is sent over the internet protocol to the core network (9). The invention has the advantage of providing the optimised speech path by using the most appropriate parts of existing circuit-switched and packet-switched domains, thus, enabling voice calls, facsimile transmissions and computer-generated data to be transported over a single data network.

    Abstract: A handover method comprising encrypting communication between a first network node 6 of a first (old) network 2 and a communication unit (mobile station) 22 using a first ciphering key, encrypting communication between a second network node 14 of a second (new) network 4 and a communication unit using a second ciphering key, wherein the handover is performed without the second network retrieving the second cipher key or information relating to the second cipher key. This results in a reduction of handover delay. The second cipher key may be passed from the first network to the second network as part of a handover message. The method may further comprise encrypting communication between the communication unit and a network node using a third ciphering key during the handover process. The third cipher key may be used to encrypt communication in addition to the first and second cipher keys used to encrypt communication in the first and second networks respectively. Alternatively the third cipher key may only be used to encrypt communication during the handover process. In a further embodiment communication may be unencrypted during the handover process.
