PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for implementing confidence metric which is based on a closed loop type transmission diversity. SOLUTION: A method for adapting an antenna array for closed loop type transmission diversity comprises the steps of: receiving an adapting signal, corresponding to an antenna array weighting pattern for a time period; demodulating the adapting signal so as to provide a plurality of codes; determining the confidence metrics for the plurality of codes (S607); forming a set of ordered codes for comparing the plurality of codes, having preferred confidence metric with a code used at the end of the plurality of codes, having non-preferred confidence metric; and selecting an antenna array weighting pattern, corresponding to the set of ordered codes (S627). A filter fast Fourier transmultiplexer (216) divides a multi-channel communication signal into single channel communication signals through a cascade of filters (304, 314, 348, 354, 360, 366, 404-418) and mixers (604-610). The output sample rate is maintained at the input sample and memory requirements and multiplications are substantially reduced.
Abstract:
A controller (102) in a fixed network of a wireless data communication system (100) transmits an indication that a diversity transmission of the information stream is available. When predetermined capabilities of a user equipment (112) and the fixed network are sufficient to allow soft combining of a primary transmission and the diversity transmission of bits of the information stream in the user equipment, the controller further transmits primary and diversity transmissions in a manner that facilitates soft combining in the user equipment, and transmits a group identity of the information stream to indicate that the information stream is in the primary and diversity transmissions.
Abstract:
In a transceiver for transmitting a communication signal from an antenna array (302) in a wireless communication system, a different element pilot is transmitted from a plurality of antenna elements in an antenna array. Thereafter, transmitter control data based upon measured characteristics of the element pilots as measured at a subscriber unit is received at the transceiver (308). In response to the transmitter control data, a plurality of adaptive array weights for modifying a plurality of element communication signals are determined (306). Next, the transceiver determines that the subscriber unit is ready to receive a communication signal transmitted from the antenna array (312) and weighted according to the plurality of adaptive array weights (306). In response to determining that the subscriber unit is ready, the transceiver modifies the plurality of element communication signals according to the determined plurality of adaptive array weights.

In a method for producing antenna element signals (112 and 114) for transmitting a serial traffic channel (58) from a plurality of elements (116 and 118) in an antenna array, data in the serial traffic channel is converted to data in two or more parallel traffic channels (64 and 66). Thereafter, data in the two or more parallel traffic channels are spread with different spreading codes (68 and 70) to produce spread traffic signals (72 and 74). The spread traffic signals are combined to produce combined signals (80), which are each modified according to adaptive array weigths (90 and 92) to produce element signals (94 and 96). A pilot signal is then added (98) to at least one of the element signals to produce two or more antenna element signals (94 and 96).

A method and means are provided of transmultiplexing a plurality of signals between a plurality of signal terminals (17 or 29) and a plurality of selected radio frequency channels. The method includes the step of, and means for, frequency translating and filtering the plurality of signals between the plurality of selected channels and a polyphase discrete Fourier transform filter bank (16 or 21) within a comb filter (15 or 22). The method further includes the step of frequency division multiplexing the plurality of signals between the plurality of signal terminals and comb filter (15 or 22) within a polyphase discrete Fourier transform filter bank (16 or 21).
