Abstract: A communication system comprises a first plurality of remote (mobile) stations (107, 109, 111) belonging to a first call group (119) having an associated first encryption key and a first encryption mode. A second plurality of remote stations (113, 115) belongs to a second call group (121) having an associated second encryption key and a second encryption mode. A group controller (117) forms a third call group (123) which comprises the first and the second call groups (119, 123) and which has an associated third encryption key. When communicating on the third, combined call group, the first plurality of remote stations (107, 109, 111) use the third encryption key and the first encryption mode whereas the second plurality of remote stations (113, 115) use the third encryption key and the second encryption mode. The invention may provide an improved system for combining call groups supporting encrypted communication. The invention is applicable to a TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) cellular communication system.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of operation of a mobile communication system comprising at least one mobile station is disclosed. The method and apparatus comprise storing in a database information relating to coverage areas of a plurality of wireless networks and monitoring the mobile station for its location while the mobile station is connected to a serving network. The method and apparatus then require comparing the monitored location of the mobile station with the stored coverage area information to produce an alert signal in the mobile station which indicates to the mobile station that one of the wireless networks is nearby. The method and apparatus then initiate a procedure to handover connectivity from the serving network to a nearby network, wherein the serving network and the nearby network use routing address protocols which have a common internet protocol (IP) address routing portion.

Abstract: Wimax (IEEE 802.16e) networks are capable of handling full frequency division duplexing, however for economic and other reasons it may be desirable to operate half frequency division duplex (HFDD) terminals on the network. The invention proposes a frame structure with an initial downlink broadcast period 1005, followed by a half duplex downlink period1007 followed by a half duplex uplink period 1013. At the very end of the frame special transmission can be sent 1015/1017, with full duplex units going last 1017 so that half duplex units can use the time to switch back to downlink/receive mode. Uplinks from full duplex units, and possibly half duplex units not scheduled to receive downloads, are scheduled into the half duplex download period 1011. Similarly full duplex downloads are preferably scheduled during the half duplex download period 1009. All of the periods have variable durations which are advised along with terminal allocations in a map broadcast by the base station.

Abstract: A communication system comprises a first plurality of remote stations 107, 109, 111, belonging to a first call group 119 having an associated first encryption key and first encryption mode and a second plurality of remote stations 113, 115, belonging to a second call group 121 having an associated second encryption key and second encryption mode. The encryption mode is the mode of encryption to be used by the stations belonging to the call or talk group, for example, in accordance with the TETRA standards, four default encryption modes are possible: Mode 0 is non-encrypted transmission and non-encrypted reception, Mode 1 is non-encrypted transmission and encrypted or non-encrypted reception, Mode 2 is encrypted transmission and encrypted or non-encrypted reception and Mode 3 is encrypted transmission and encrypted reception. A group controller 117 forms a third call group 123 which comprises the first and second call groups 119, 121 and which has an associated third encryption key. When communicating on the third, merged call group, the first plurality of remote stations 107, 109, 111 use the third encryption key and the first encryption mode while the second plurality of remote stations 113, 115 use the third encryption key and the second encryption mode. The invention may provide an improved system for combining call groups supporting encrypted communication (e.g. talk groups of different emergency services) and is applicable to a TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) cellular communication system.

Abstract: In the future it is expected that where a mobile station is within communication range of other terminals in both a cellular network and a WLAN, the available data rate, throughput and system capacity will favour the use of the WLAN. No cooperation protocol exists between cellular and WLAN networks, however. The invention discloses a method of storing in a database, information relating to the coverage area of a plurality of local wireless networks and monitoring the location of the mobile station. The monitored location is compared with the stored coverage area infonnation and a signal is produced in or to the mobile station to alert it to the fact that one of wireless networks is nearby. A fixed installation eg for use as a system controller and a mobile station for use in the method are also described.
