    Abstract: A comparator comprising one or more first stage voters (115, 117, 119, 121) operably coupled to a second stage voter (123), and methods of voting with t he comparator. The first stage voters receive and vote among a number of instances of a signal (A1-A16, B1-B16), yielding respective first stage vote d signals (C1, C2), and the second stage voter operates to receive and vote among the first stage voted signals, yielding a second stage voted signal. I n alternative embodiments, the first stage voters independently determine (220 ) vote conclusion times (TA, TB) that are generally non-coincident, independently determine (420) vote conclusion times (TAB, TAB') that are substantially coincident, or one of the first stage voters may determine (32 0) a common vote conclusion time (TAB) which is communicated (325) to the other first stage voters. The respective vote conclusion times determines the time at which time the first stage voted signals are sent to the second stage voter. In another embodiment, the first stage voters receive (500, 540) a plurality of instances of a signal, retrieve characteristic information including, for example, context group information (545) and error status (55 5) and determine the acceptability of the signals by determining, for example, whether the signals are of theproper context (550) and have a better error status (560) than a predetermined error threshold. Thereafter, the instances of the signal having a positive acceptability criteria may be sent to a seco nd stage voter.

    Abstract: A packet switched communications system (100) for use with a dynamic voice jitter buffer (203) and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) packets includes a source (101) transmitting at least one VoIP packet, one or more routers (105, 107, 109) for routing the VoIP packets and a destination (111) for receiving the at least one VoIP packet. The VoIP packet operates to convey congestion information regarding the packet switched communications system (100) to at least one buffer located at the destination to dynamically control the capacity of the jitter buffer located at the destination to provide VoIP communication with no jitter and minimal delay.

    Abstract: The method involves receiving a signal frame (207-209) from each of several base stations (202-204) for generating several signal frames. Each signal frame comprises a group of code words which include a priority code word to generate several priority codewords. Each priority codeword is located at a certain position of a signal frame and has an appropriate measure of signal quality for generating several measures of signal quality. It is determined whether the measures of signal quality correspond to the priority code words. An additional measure of signal quality is determined for each priority code words for generating several additional measures of signal quality. A priority code word is selected which is based on a comparison (206) with the additional measures of signal quality for generating a selected code word.

    Abstract: A mobile communication system (200) employs a method and apparatus for performing diversity voting. A comparator (206) receives a signal frame (207-209) of code words from each of multiple signal sources (202-204). A prioritized code word of each signal frame occupies a corresponding frame position and has a respective signal quality metric associated therewith. The comparator determines whether each signal quality metric accurately represents the signal quality of its respective prioritized code word. When the signal quality metrics do not accurately represent the signal qualities of their respective prioritized code words, the comparator determines a supplemental signal quality metric for each prioritized code word. The comparator then selects one prioritized code word from all the corresponding prioritized code words based on a comparison of the supplemental signal quality metrics for input into the corresponding frame position of a voted signal frame.
