Abstract:
A cellular communications system including at least one base station (358), mobile stations (372, 374) addressable using IP addresses within a cell (350), and a controller (300) adapted to receive a context activation request from the mobile (374) to assign a static IP address previously assigned to the mobile when it was outside of the cell (350) and to assign the static IP address if the second controller (200) associated with the location where the mobile was previously registered with the static IP address has not already reassigned it, thus enabling roaming of the mobile between cellular systems under control of different Software and Measurement Infrastructures.
Abstract:
A proxy server (136) for a multimedia communication system (100), includes a receiver (240) receiving a multiplexed information stream transmitted from a source communication unit (402, 406) to a destination communication unit (406, 402); and a processor for de-multiplexing the received multiplexed information stream and extracting non-real-time data from the multiplexed information stream. The proxy server (136) further includes error detection means, operbly coupled to a transmitter and a memory element, for determining whether an error exists in the extracted non-real-time data. if an error is detected, then a non-real-time data re-transmission request is transmitted to the source communication unit. If an error is not detected then a copy of the extracted non-real-time data is stored in said memory element. A method (400, 500) for delivering a muliplexed information stream, a communication system and a storage medium are also provided. The multiplexed packed is forwarded immediately to the receiving node as well as being processed to see if there are any errors in the non-real time streams. This ensures non-real-time multiplexed multimedia streams are communicated with minimum delay in an end-to end communication link.
Abstract:
A cellular radio communications system comprises: at least one base station for broadcasting radio signals to mobile stations within a cell; a mobile station addressable using IP addresses; and a first controller in the cell of the cellular radio communications system, the first controller being adapted: (i) to receive a request from the mobile station that the cellular radio communication system assign to the mobile station the static IP address previously assigned to the mobile station outside of the cell; (ii) in response to the request from the mobile station, to check with a second controller associated with the location where the mobile station was previously registered that the static IP address has not been assigned to another mobile station; and (iii) to assign the static IP address previously assigned to the mobile station, outside of the cell, to the mobile station for use in the cell, if the static IP address has not been assigned to another mobile station. Alternatively, the first controller may perform the check for availability of the static IP address with a controller associated with the location where the static IP address is registered. The invention also comprises methods of mobile station registration in cellular radio communication systems. The invention enables roaming by a mobile station between cellular systems which are under the control of different Software and Measurement Infrastructures. Mobile stations may be adapted to check one or more timers prior to making the static IP address request.

Abstract:
A proxy server 136 for a multimedia communication system acts as an intermediary between a source communication unit 402 and a destination communication unit 406. A multiplexed stream 410 transmitted from the source to the destination is received by the proxy sever, demultiplexed and the non-real-time data extracted. The extracted non-real-time data is error checked and, if required, a retransmission request 420 is sent to the source unit, otherwise a copy of the non-real-time data is stored for possible retransmission to the destination. To minimise the delay in the end-to-end link the multiplexed stream is also forwarded immediately by the proxy server to the destination node 412. If the destination receives non-real-time data in error, a repeat request 430 is made to the proxy server rather than the source unit. Applications include cellular communication systems such as UMTS and GPRS.
