Abstract:
A flux and solder-through coating for electrical components or assemblies is produced by melting and applying a copolymer of ethylene and an organic acid, having a mol. wt. 2000-3000, density 0.93-0.95 and ethylene/acid ratio 40:975 - 160:825. The molten material may be treated with a solvent such as an aliphatic hydrocarbon (up to 30 pts. per pt. copolymer). The mixt. can be allowed to cool to the 'cloud point', heated until clearing occurs, chilled and stirred. Additional solvent may be added at room temp. to provide a predetermined viscosity. A polymerised terpene (up to 20 wt.% of the solids in the soln.) can also be added.

An ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer can be used as a flux or a solder-through conformal coating. The copolymer can be melted and used as a coating or core for solder, or applied directly to a component, or made into a thixotropic gel with mineral spirits and/or alcohol, then applied as a coating to a component or assembly. Terpenes may be added as tackifiers in some applications. Whether used as a flux or simply solder-through coating, the material provides a self-healing moisture barrier which can safely remain on the component.

Un copolymere d'ethylene-acide acrylique peut etre utilise comme fondant ou revetement de conformation de soudure traversante. Le copolymere peut etre fondu et utilise comme revetement ou noyau de soudure, ou etre applique directement sur un composant, ou transforme en un gel thixotropique avec des esprits mineraux et/ou alcool, puis applique sous la forme d'un revetement sur un composant ou un assemblage. Des terpenes peuvent etre ajoutes en tant qu'agents poisseux dans certaines applications. Qu'ils soient utilises comme fondants ou simplement comme revetements de soudure traversante, le materiau forme une barriere a l'humidite se refermant automatiquement, qui peut rester et proteger le composant.
