Abstract: A portable radiotelephone 200 has an antenna 213 that is moveable between a retracted (313) and an extended (314) position and is capable of either radiating an output signal or receiving an input signal when disposed in both the retracted (313) and the extended (314) position. A controller places the portable radiotelephone in an on-hook state and an off-hook state responsive to a detector detecting the antenna in the retracted position and the extended position, respectively.

Abstract: The radiotelephone includes an antenna (213) that is movable between a retracted (313) and an extended (314) position and is capable of either radiating an output signal or receiving an input signal when disposed in both positions. The radiotelephone has two different predetermined operating modes when the antenna is disposed in the two positions. The radiotelephone further includes a movement detector for detecting movement of the antenna between the retracted and the extended positions, and a device for producign one of the two operation modes depending on the output of the movement detector.
