    Abstract: A portable electronic device 100, such as a lap top computer, a personal digital organiser, a camcorder, a pager or particularly a portable cellular radio telephone, can be powered from a battery pack 102, attachable directly to a rear surface 200 of device 100, or from a battery continuation apparatus or pack 104 attachable to the surface 200 and having a rear surface 242 operable to receive the battery pack 102 or another battery continuation pack (2001, Fig.23). When both packs 102 and 104 are attached, device 100 is powered from the pack 102 and a switch 1063 in pack 104 is open effectively bypassing pack 104. On receiving an audible or visual low-battery warning, the user may slidably detach the pack 102 from pack 104 and device 100, this action first causing the switch 1063 to close so that device 100 is powered from packs 102, 104 in parallel prior to disengagement of contacts 401 in pack 102 from contacts 246 in pack 104; device 100 thus receives an uninterrupted supply as pack 102 is removed. Contacts 246 are retractable and normally covered by a slidable member 244 which is moved to an open position on attaching battery pack 102 to continuation pack 104, member 244 acting to open switch 1063 after contacts 246, 401 engage with one another. A similar cover (2400, Fig.24) may be provided for the contacts on the device 100, in association with switching means which switches the device from receiving power from an external port (2404), eg. for a vehicle adapter, to receiving power from an attached battery pack 102 or 104. As an alternative to a mechanically operated bypassing switch 1063, a microprocessor may be provided to control bypass switching means and to control a contact cover operating motor in response to optical or magnetic sensing of the stages of attachment of a pack 102 or 104, the microprocessor also managing the battery packs as they become depleted so that an uninterrupted supply is provided without requiring the user to mechanically detach a battery pack.
