    Abstract: A unique cellular telephone (100) digitally frequency locks to the received base station transmitter signal. The cellular telephone (100) includes a radio transceiver (106), a reference oscillator (104), and microcomputer (102) with memory therein for controlling the operation thereof. The radio transceiver (106) includes a phase-locked loop (PLL) synthesizer 120, a receiver mixer (122) followed by one or more gain stages (124), a phase detector (126), and a divider (128). The PLL synthesizer (120) generates a signal locked to the reference oscillator (104) that is mixed with the incoming base station transmitter signal in the receive mixer (122) to generate an intermediate frequency signal. The output of the reference oscillator (104) also feeds the divider (128), which divides the reference oscillator signal by an amount so as to generate the divided signal having a frequency substantially the same as the frequency of the intermediate frequency signal from the mixer (122). The output of the divider (128) and the amplified intermediate frequency signal from the amplifier (124) are both fed into the phase detector (126), which generates a binary error signal (110). The microcomputer (102) is responsive to the binary error signal (110) for frequency locking reference oscillator 104 to the received base station transmitter signal.

    Abstract: The menu system includes a keypad which is connected to a processor and an alphanumeric display. The processor has a number of menus consisting of elements which are shown on sequential screens by the alphanumeric display panel. The processor controls the display in response to commands entered by the user via the keyboard. The sequence in which the menus are displayed may be selected by the user, and the menus may be of a predetermined fixed length. A second set of menus is provided, and this set may not be set up by the user. The menus are operated by use of a selection of buttons on the keypad. These include an 'OK' button, an erase button, a menu button, and left and right selection arrow buttons.

    Abstract: A circuit and associated method for a radiotelephone which parses together sets of sequences of digits to form a telephonic identification code. Telephonic identification codes are stored in memory elements (506) and the present location of the telephonic apparatus is also stored in a memory element. A user of the radiotelephone desiring to effectuate a communication link with other telephonic apparatus inputs to the circuit portions of a telephonic identification code associated with the other telephonic apparatus. The circuit compares (518) the portion input by the user with stored telephonic identification codes. A stored telephonic identification code having similar digits is identified, and a new telephonic identification code is parsed together (524), if necessary, from the stored telephonic identification code based upon the present location of the radiotelephone.
