Abstract:
A shaped structural member provides mechanical protection in a portable communication device (200). A first portion (223, 225) of the structural member comprises conducting material and a second portion (213) comprises insulating material. The second portion comprises a tough and resilient thermoplastic organic polymeric material which has been shaped and bonded to the first portion by injection moulding.
Abstract:
A casing structure for an electronic device comprises a carrier against which one or more of the device components may be fitted, the carrier having a first carrier face and a second carrier face, a first cover adapted to attach to the carrier to form a first enclosure over at least part of the first carrier face and a second cover adapted to attach to the carrier to form a second enclosure over at least part of the second carrier face, wherein the carrier has a receptacle for receiving the first and second covers, the receptacle having a first recess for receiving a rim of the first cover and a second recess for receiving a rim of the second cover, the receptacle having in at least one of the first and second recesses a cushioning layer for cushioning the cover received in the recess. An electronic device incorporating the casing structure is also described.

Abstract:
A connector 205 suitable for making an electrical connection between first and second electrical components of an electronic device (100, fig.1), the connector comprising a conducting strip including: a first section including a deflectable member 209 and a support member 211 supporting the deflectable member 209, the deflectable member 209 being adapted to be contacted and deflected about the support member by a conductor (111, fig.5) of the first component; and a second section 401, 405, 403, 409 adapted to provide a spring loading of the first section when the first section is contacted and deflected by the conductor of the first component, the second section being adapted to contact a conductor of the second component. The connector is preferably in the form of a resilient S-shape which avoids excessive contact force. Also described is a connector module (109, fig.2) including at least one of the connectors, the module may be used to electrically connect the terminals of a battery to a mobile phone.
Abstract:
A telephone unit 5 including a touchsensitive display screen 3 operable to display images of user operable keys 15, 17 such that when a region of the screen facing one of the key images is touched by the user a telephone function corresponding to that key is operated and wherein the display screen is operable to display the images of the keys in a first region of the display screen and another display image in a second area of the screen, and wherein the unit is operable to provide to a user selectable options of different relative positions of the first and second regions of the display screen. The unit may use a radio frequency transceiver or a modem connected to a landline for communication. The high resolution, LCD, LED or electroluminescent display is capable of displaying text, data, messages, pictures, graphical images, video images, maps, visual images of optical, infra-red (IR) or X-ray photographs and information relating to such images. Ergonomic, thumb-operated or one-handed use is enabled by displaying a keypad in the upper region of the display.
Abstract:
A shaped structural member such as a shield (209) adapted for use to provide mechanical protection in a portable communication device (200) comprises a first portion (223, 225) comprising conducting material and a second portion (213) comprising insulating material and is characterised in that the second portion comprises a tough and resilient thermoplastic organic polymeric material which has been shaped and bonded to the first portion by injection moulding. The second portion may be formed from a thermoplastic amorphous resin material such as a polycarbonate material which may beneficially include filler particles and/or reinforcing fibres for added strength and/or for matching of one or more physical properties, such as thermal expansion, of the first and second portions. The first portion may be a metallic material, such as magnesium, aluminium or titanium or an alloy based on one of these metals, which may itself have been formed by injection moulding prior to addition of the second portion. Also described is a method of producing the shaped structural member.
