Joint detection of data signals occurs in a code division, multiple access (CDMA) communication system as follows: A digital signal processor (315) first extracts a midamble portion of transmitted signal vectors and generates an estimate of the channel response corresponding to each user-antenna pair using a channel estimator (401). In the preferred embodiment, each user's transmission within the communication system comprises either the type-1 or type-2 burst with varying midamble and guard period durations. Next, a convolution processor (402) forms the convolution of the user signature sequence with the channel impulse response estimate associated with each user and each of the antennas (308)-(310). A detector (403) utilizes the set of vectors and creates a set of sub-system matrices and solves the sub-system matrices to extract symbol information from an individual remote unit's transmission. Finally, the detector (403) outputs symbol information for subsequent infrastructure processing.

A digital video broadcast transition method and device allows a streaming digital video program to be transferred from one broadcast receiver to another across digital video broadcast formats. Initially, a first digital video broadcast receiver is receiving a first program ( 210 ). If a second digital video broadcast receiver capable of receiving a digital video broadcast program corresponding to the first program is available to the user ( 220 ), the second digital video broadcast receiver is enabled ( 250 ). The transfer from one digital video broadcast receiver to another ( 240 ) can be implemented manually by the user or automatically via a user preference profile. The transition can be made gradually by having both receivers running simultaneously for a predetermined non-zero time period before releasing digital video broadcasting resources of the first device or can be made abruptly by setting the predetermined time period to zero seconds ( 260 ).

An aspect of the invention relates to a method and apparatus for multiplexing content. In one example, a first transport stream is received. The first transport stream includes a sequence of burst cycles, each of the burst cycles having a plurality of packet bursts respectively associated with a plurality of primary services. In one example, a primary service is a national service. A packet burst stream is received that is associated with a secondary service. In one example, a secondary service is a regional service. The first transport stream is multiplexed with the packet burst stream to produce a second transport stream. The second transport stream includes a deterministic relationship between the plurality of packet bursts in each of the burst cycles and packet bursts of the packet burst stream. Additional packet burst streams associated with additional secondary services may be received and multiplexed in a similar manner.
