    Abstract: A mobile communication system (100) has an infrastructure (135) including a plurality of base stations (103, 107) each operable to provide wireless communications to at least one mobile station (119,123) and a processor (101) operable to receive from the base stations resource requests relating to wireless communications in which mobile stations served by the base stations are to participate and to process the requests, the processor including a congestion detector(311) operable to monitor a rate of receiving or processing the communication resource requests to detect when a congestion condition occurs when a threshold rate is reached or exceeded and a controller (303) operable to send to at least one of the base stations (103, 107) a congestion indication message indicating that the at least one base station is to reduce a rate of forwarding resource requests.

    Abstract: The unit comprises an input transducer, e.g. microphone to convert speech of a user into electrical signals, a transmitter for converting the electrical signals produced by the transducer into modulated radio frequency (r.f.) signals for sending to a distant receiver and an arrangement for indicating to the user the level of sound intensity of the user's speech recorded at the input transducer, the arrangement comprising a detector for detecting for one or more given periods of time the peak intensity of sound received at the input transducer, display driver means for producing an electrical display driver signal indicative of the peak intensity of sound in one or more measurement periods and an electro-optical display operable by input of the electrical display driver signal to display an image representing the measured peak intensity of sound for one or more measurement periods. The radio unit is operable to make communications in a direct mode of operation.
