Abstract: An equalization system for equalizing a corrupted signal is disclosed. The equalization system includes a complex matched filter (400) and a maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) (405) for removing the effects of phase shift, amplitude variations, intersymbol interference, etc. resulting from multi-pathing and noise contributed by the receiver front end. The system estimates a correlation signal C(t) (505) and synchronizes C(t) 505 to maximize its energy as seen on the taps of the complex matched filter (400). Taps having amplitude coefficients below a predetermined threshold are set to zero to produce a modified CIR estimate. The modified CIR estimate which has had the effects of noise virtually eliminated, is then used to construct the complex matched filter (400) and is also used as input to the MLSE (405) to produce a better equalized data signal.

Abstract: An antenna switching system for handling high traffic sectors in a cellular radiotelephone system. The system switches the cell's base station transmitters (210) to sectors that have more mobile traffic than they can handle. The additional transmitters (210) increase the number of frequencies in the overloaded sector, thereby allowing a greater amount of mobile traffic to use the cell.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for diversity reception in a communication system is provided. A dual branch receiver (102, 103) is provided with a stored replica of expected reference information so that correlation with received time-dispersed signals (100, 101) produces an estimate of the transmission channel's impulse response as seen by each branch, and determines, among other things, phase error between the branch local oscillators and the time-dispersed signals. Matched filters (214, 215) are constructed which then coherently align the time-dispersed signals from each branch with that branch's local oscillator (208, 209) which constitutes a part of the signal equalization. A diversity processor (105) performs bit by bit selection on the re-aligned signals, maximal ratio combining of the re-aligned signals, or equal gain combining of the re-aligned signals, followed by a sequence estimation which uses similarly selected or combined channel distortion compensation parameters to complete the equalization process on the new signal.

THE SYSTEM ESTIMATES A CORRELATION SIGNAL C (T) (505) AND SYNCHRONIZES C (T) 505 TO MAXIMIZE ITS ENERGY AS SEEN ON THE TAPS OF THE COMPLEX MATCHED FILTER (400). Abstract: A procedure and device for variable reception in a communication system are presented. The receiver (100, 101) featuring two branches is equipped with a stored replica of the anticipated reference information (104), so that the correlation to the received time dispersed signal produces an estimate of the channel impulse response upon transmission, as seen by each of the branches (100, 101) thus among others determining the phase error rate between local oscillators (208, 209) within each branch and the time dispersed signals. Adapted filters (214, 215) are provided which then coherently align time dispersed signals from each of the branches (100, 101) with the local oscillator (208, 209) of the branch, being part of the signal alignment. A variable processor (105) executes a bit by bit selection on the realigned signals, combining with the largest ratio of the realigned signals or combining with realigned signals of equal amplification, followed by the estimation of the sequence, which uses similarly selected or combined parameters by channel distortion equalisation to conclude the equalisation process for a new signal.
