Abstract: A method and system for time aligning a frame (60) in a communication network (10) involves the steps of; i) determining if a frame needs to be advanced at a BTS (14), and ii) sending a shortened synchronization pattern from the BSC (12). The BTS (14) then determines if a short or long synchronization pattern has been sent by determining (256) if the received data stream matches a long synchronization pattern and setting a first flag when they do match. If the received data stream does not match the long synchronization pattern and the first flag is set (264), the data stream is compared (266) to the short synchronization pattern. When they match a second flag is set (268).

Abstract: A method and apparatus for packet alignment in a simulcast system includes a communications controller (310) having a vocoder and an input/output (I/O) processor (313) controlling the vocoder (311), the I/O processor having a timing alignment control (315) and a packet counter (314) for inserting timing alignment tags in voice/data packets and adjusting packet numbering and timing based on alignment requests from a master radio communication unit. The communications controller is coupled to radio communication units (330, 340, 350), each having a packet buffer (331) and an alignment processor (332) which includes a packet number detector (333) for detecting the transmission timing tag and sending a request for a packet numbering adjustment to the communications controller and a timing alignment detector (334) for comparing a receive time of the first information packet and a predetermined preferential receive time and for sending a timing alignment request to the communications controller.

Abstract: A wireless system includes base station transceivers (102-104) to communicate with at least one mobile station (108), the base station transceivers communicate with a network controller (110). The base station controls a header for a packet frame to be communicated between the base station transceiver and the network controller wherein a portion of the header identifies the frame as one containing no data package. The data bits of the header field may contain a predetermined bit pattern for a frame including no data package. Information received by the base station from the mobile station may be dropped, and the header information replaced with the specified bit pattern, if a decoding metric passes a threshold. The information received by the base station from the mobile station may be dropped, and the header information replaced with the specified bit pattern, if a CRC for the frame received from the mobile station fails.
