Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved metal can battery cell in which a short circuit state brought about by the deformation of the metal can is prevented. SOLUTION: This cell is preferably provided with a cross section similar to the shape of a letter "T", and includes a spacer 606 arranged between an electrode assembly in an electrochemical battery cell and the metal can. By means of the spacer, a void 610 is made between a corner part of the metal can and the electrode assembly. By this "crumple zone" (impact absorbing strip), a damage of an internal electrode assembly caused by the outside damage of the can is prevented. In this way, the acceptance of a normal OEM drop test becomes easier without losing the cell performance. Furthermore, by making the cell resistant to the external impact, the reliability of the cell is improved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
