Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved image pickup system capable of compensating different responses to light rays at the different areas of an optical sensor. SOLUTION: In this image pickup system 10, the different amplitudes of pixel signals generated by optical active elements in the optical sensor 32 whose response to projected light is not uniform are compensated. The sensor is divided into area groups 52 so as to practically equalize the responses of optical active elements in the area. When the pixel signals generated in different areas are received, a processing circuit 34 compensates the different responses at the different area through a programmable gain amplifier 72 for dynamically controlling the gain.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color balance circuit and its method that takes color balancing for pixel signals while operating an image acquisition system. SOLUTION: A programmable gain amplifier 204 amplifies pixels signals. A gain of the amplifier 204 is set by a ratio of a capacitance of programmable capacitors 320, 330 to a capacitance of fixed capacitors 310, 311. Control data enables switches 323, 324, 333, 334 and enables binary weight capacitors 321, 322, 331, 332 to set the capacitance of the programmable capacitors. The control data are used to adjust the gain of the programmable amplifier whenever each pixel signal is applied, so that the same programmable gain amplifier can amplify all primary color pixel signals.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup system where data are read from an optical sensor in a block form. SOLUTION: An image capture system 10 includes an integrated circuit 18 having an interface block 22. The interface block generates a signal to control reading voltage from photo detectors arranged in an optical sensor 20. The voltage generated by the photo detectors in response to light to a pixel is read and reset without destroying the voltage of other surrounding pixel. Pixel elements are grouped as a macro block and an analog sense signal therefrom is read to a sense block 26 in real time. The sense block 26 amplifies an analog signal for conversion to a YUV form digital signal.
