Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for determining signal usability, based on RF channel interference detection. SOLUTION: A receiver receives a stream of altered information symbols to generate an altered stream. The receiver determines fading signal representation from the altered stream, generates a determined fading signal, and determines the information symbol representation in a symbol stream from the altered stream, to generate the determined information symbol. The receiver determines the desired portion of the altered stream based on the determined information symbol and the determined fading signal, and determines an non-desired portion of the altered stream, based on the altered stream's desired portion and the altered stream. The receiver provides an indicator for the altered information symbol usability, based on the determined fading signal and the nondesired portions of the altered stream. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
Abstract:
A home agent ( 104, 108 ) and a foreign agent ( 110, 114 ) in a wireless communication system ( 100 ) establish ( 202 ) a special communications channel ( 140-154 ) between themselves, the special communications channel dedicated to messages addressed to multiple mobile nodes. The home agent then detects ( 206 ) whether a message received by the home agent is addressed to multiple mobile nodes. When the message is addressed to multiple mobile nodes, the home agent sends ( 208 ) the message to the foreign agent through the special communications channel.
Abstract:
A mobile station (106) establishes a real time communication link via an access point (102) for carrying voice or other time-sensitive data. A WLAN subsystem (204) of the mobile station is normally kept in a low power state. Upon initiating a communication link the mobile station signals to the acces s point that uplink poll-based power save delivery mode will be used (614), an d the access point reserves resources to assure the necessary quality of service. The mobile station initiates a frame transaction by first powering up the WLAN subsystem (712), acquiring the WLAN channel (407), and transmitting a polling frame. Upon successful receipt of the polling frame the access point prepares to reply with a response frame at an unspecified time within servic e window, during which time the mobile station maintains the WLAN subsystem power up and ready to receive the response frame. Upon successful receipt of the response frame, the mobile station places the WLAN subsystem back into a low power state.
Abstract:
In a wireless communication system (100) having a plurality of communication cells (115, 117), and a plurality of mobile stations (118) operating within selected ones of the multiple communication cells (115, 117), a method and an apparatus for selecting those communication cells (115, 117). Within each communication cell (115, 117), a base station (112) transmits a message directed to the mobile stations (118), and detects a response indicator in the selected ones of the plurality of communication cells (115, 117). The message may be a broadcast page message transmitted by the base station (112). The response indicator may be an impulse radio-frequency energy transmission generated by the plurality of mobile stations (118) operating within the selected ones of the plurality of communication cells (115, 117). The base station (112) may detect the impulse radio-frequency energy transmission on a control channel or during a predetermined time window period (303, 410, 413, 416) following transmission of the message. The base station (112) directs call traffic to the plurality of mobile stations (118) in the selected ones of the plurality of communication cells (115, 117).
Abstract:
A radio communication system controller embodies the present invention by providing extended use (306) of a communication resource (106) to a plurality of communication units. The inventive method includes the steps of assigning (402) a first communication resource to a first communication unit, and then temporarily configuring (406) the assigned communication resource as a reserved resource. The controller then receives (408), from a second communication unit, a request to transmit a second communication on the assigned communication resource. Lastly, the controller re-configures (412) the assigned communication resource to allow transmission of the second communication on the assigned communication resource.
Abstract:
A communications system for providing packet data service to mobile stations(110) performs registration of the mobile station prior to engaging in packet data service. The registration procedure includes sending a request to register (300) to a DAP (113), transferring (302) subscriber data from an HLR(124) to a D-VLR (126), authenticating (306) the mobile subscriber, selecting a mobile data gateway (116) to service the mobile station, transferring (308) the subscriber data from the D-VLR to the mobile data gatewa, and establishing(312) a packet data link between the mobile data gateway and the mobile station.
Abstract:
A new data circuit equipment (DCE) coupled to an IWF and a terminal adapter (TA) coupled to a mobile station provide interconnection within a RF communication system such that Class 2 service common to wireline network equipment can be beneficially employed in the wireless RF communication system. The new DCE and TA are transparent to external wireline systems while maintaining compatibility with, inter alia, the predetermined data service protocol layers of the RF communication system, the RF air-interface and/or radio link protocol (RLP) of the RF communication system.
Abstract:
A receiver may reduce the effects of distortion when determining signal usability in the following manner. Upon receiving a signal, the receiver separates a desired component, an undesired component, and a distortion component, wherein the desired component includes the signal that was originally transmitted and the undesired component includes interference and noise. Having isolated the distortion component, it can be mitigated such that the usability of the signal received can be determined based on a ratio between the desired and undesired components.

Abstract:
A wireless two-way communications apparatus (700) having a radio resource manager (706) is configured and arranged to effect one or more modes of operation (203, 204, 206, and 207) as a function, at least in part, of whether the apparatus is presently operating in a power saving mode of operation (201) and/or is presently supporting an active plesiochronous communication session (202 and 205). Pursuant to one approach, when the apparatus is operating in a power saving mode of operation and presently supports such a communication session and when the apparatus further determines (301) that a wireless access point beacon or supplemental beacon is at least largely coincident with a scheduled active window of that communication session, the apparatus can determine (302) whether to facilitate rescheduling a next monitoring of the beacon or supplemental beacon and/or altering the scheduled active window itself to thereby render the beacon or supplemental beacon monitorable by the apparatus.
