Abstract: A mobile station for use in a cellular communication system includes a transceiver and a processor operable to apply a cell re-selection procedure which includes determining whether the mobile station should change its serving base station, wherein the transceiver is operable to receive via its serving base station a signal from an infrastructure processor advising or instructing the mobile station to select a particular base station in its cell re-selection procedure, and the processor of the mobile station is operable to apply a cell re-selection procedure to determine whether the mobile station should change its serving base station to the particular selected base station, wherein the particular selected base station has been selected and specified by the infrastructure processor based upon the location of members of a group of mobile stations with which the mobile station is to communicate.

Abstract: A mobile station (112) for use in a cellular communication system (100) includes a transceiver (transmitter and receiver) and a processor (214) operable to apply a cell re-selection procedure which includes determining whether the mobile station should change its serving base station, wherein the transceiver is operable to receive via its serving base station (122) a signal from an infrastructure processor (402) advising or instructing the mobile station to select a particular base station (126) in its cell re-selection procedure, and the processor of the mobile station is operable to apply a cell re-selection procedure to determine whether the mobile station should change its serving base station to the particular selected base station, wherein the particular selected base station has been selected and specified by the infrastructure processor based upon the location of members of a group of mobile stations with which the mobile station is to communicate with the objective of minimising the number of base stations or cells to which meters of the group are attached. Also described is an infrastructure processor (402) which assists or directs the mobile station in the cell re-selection procedure as well as a communication system (100) and method in which the mobile station and the infrastructure processor operate.

Abstract: A method of operation in a message trunked mode of a trunked communication system (100) comprising a plurality of user terminals (MS 3, MS 5, MS 7) and a controller (17), including the following steps carried out by the controller: (i) allocating a communication channel when a first one (MS 3) of the user terminals has requested initiation of a call; (ii) applying a hang time upon detection that a participant in a call has finished communicating (e.g. speaking) and keeping the channel allocated to the call during the hang time; (iii) determining if one of the user terminals participating in the call requests during the hang time to continue (e.g. to continue a conversation in) the call; and (iv) clearing the communication channel if no call continuation request from one of the participating user terminals has been detected and/or granted when the hang time has expired; wherein the controller (17) is operable to apply variable hang times during operation of the system. Also described are a system and controller for operation of the method.
