Abstract:
A method and system (400) are provided for managing communication sessions in multiple wireless communication networks. The multiple wireless communication networks include one or more home communication networks and one or more guest communication networks. The method, at a communication device, includes predicting (504) a coverage gap in a home communication network. The coverage gap is within a coverage region of the home communication network. Further, the method includes temporarily utilizing (506) at least one communication resource of a guest communication network when the communication device enters the coverage gap and when the at least one communication resource of the guest communication network is substantially available. The at least one communication resource enables communication at the communication device. The utilization of the at least one communication resource of the guest communication network is controlled by at least one of the home communication network and an overlay network.
Abstract:
A system (100) and method (300) for mesh/ad hoc participation is provided. The method can include providing (310) an incentive to a user operating a device in an ad hoc network and determining (320) network resources associated with providing the incentive. The method can establish a credit system for devices within the ad hoc network, evaluate a supply and demand for the network resources, and allocate credits to the devices for forwarding packets in the ad hoc network. The method can determine a delivery capacity for the devices and negotiate an optimal packet route through the devices in the ad hoc network based on the supply and demand.
Abstract:
A method (400) for establishing a first communication link between a communications network (105) and a network node (115) in accordance with a first wireless communications protocol. The method also can include evaluating a signal parameter for a signal transmitted between a station (110) and the network node. In response to the channel quality exceeding a threshold, the station can be signaled to establish a second communication link with the network node in accordance with a second wireless communications protocol. The network node can bridge communications between the station and the communications network.
Abstract:
A communication system (100) and a method (500) of communicating backhaul data. The communication system can include a controller (160, 225). The controller can dynamically select from a plurality of backhaul sites (120, 125) at least a first backhaul site to establish a backhaul communication link with an access point (115). The controller also can generate a control signal that indicates to the access point to beam steer a backhaul signal to the first backhaul site. The access point can include a phased array (215) that dynamically beam steers the backhaul signal in azimuth and elevation.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method in a multi-hop network node for reducing data traffic loading comprising the steps of storing (204) a first communication portion, of a plurality of communication portions, received at a network node in a network node memory Then generating (206) a first communication portion checksum and forwarding (208) the first communication portion to a destination from the network node The method in the network node also compπses storing (210) the first communication portion checksum in a table of the network node Then receiving (302) a second communication portion and determining the second communication portion checksum Then determining (304) that the first communication portion checksum and the second communication portion checksum are the same and determining (310) that at least one more communications portion of the plurality of communication portions, already stored at the network node, is associated with the received first communication portion
Abstract:
A wireless communication device (104) comprising a transceiver (202), a memory portion (206) and a display (208). The transceiver (202) receives (704, 806) a data stream of media content from a remote device (102) on a periodic basis. The memory portion (206) stores (704, 806) the data stream in a content cache (306). The data stream is retrieved from the content cache (306) a portion at a time, and the display (208) displays (706, 808) the portion. The display (208) has a passive mode and an actuated mode. In the passive mode, dynamic media content is continually provided at the display (208) throughout operation. In the actuated mode, detailed content and/or functionality associated with the dynamic media content is provided. The touch screen (210) changes the display from the passive mode to the actuated mode upon activation.
Abstract:
A wireless subscriber unit (200) determines (502) a billing mode applicable to a portion of a call, and generates (508, 518) partitioning information for the portion of the call, corresponding to the billing mode. The wireless subscriber unit and a consolidation system (300, 400) cooperate to partition (514, 526) the billing charges between at least two billable entities, based upon the partitioning information. A method of partitioning is also described.
Abstract:
In a communication system where frame boundaries for the discrete frames for different users may be offset relative to one another, assignment of a remote unit (125) to a particular frame offset occurs by a processor (321) determining a frame offset belonging to a group that is the least busy group of all possible groups. In addition, during handoff of the remote unit (125) from a serving base station (130) to a neighboring base station, the remote unit (125) is attempted to be kept within the same call group, however should the same call group of the neighboring base station be filled, the remote unit (125) is placed in a second call group that is one call group prior to the current call group.
Abstract:
A method of operation of a cognitive radio in a hierarchical group of cognitive radios, the hierarchy of cognitive radios including at least one master cognitive radio that has a higher position in the hierarchy than another of the cognitive radios in the group, consistent with the present invention, involves establishing a first operational policy for the group of cognitive radios; determining that the operational policy is unsuitable for use by at least one member of the group; and the master cognitive radio dictating a change in the operational policy used by the group to a second operational policy for use by the group.
Abstract:
A method in a mobile wireless communications handset (10) located in a multi-level environment, for example a multi-floor building, including receiving first altitude information, for example the floor number, from an altitude information transmitter (40) when the handset is on a first level, and receiving second altitude information from an altitude information transmitter when the handset is on a second level different than the first level. The different altitude information may be transmitted from different transmitters on corresponding levels, or from a single transmitter, located for example in an elevator.
