Abstract:
A communication system (100) distributes, in the time domain, acknowledgment transmissions by a group of access terminals (101-104) sharing a same time domain resource. A position of one or more access terminals in the group of access terminals is determined (320) and each of the one or more access terminals then sends (324) an acknowledgment transmission, such as an acknowledgment or negative acknowledgement, in a time slot that is N time slots after the shared time domain resource, where N is a function of the position of the access terminal in the group of access terminals.
Abstract:
A method (300) in a wireless communications network infrastructure entity, including determining (310) that a wireless communications device has discontinued transmission on an allocated channel, indicating (340) to the wireless communications device whether the channel allocation to the wireless communications device is extended for example, using rate control information transmitted to the wireless communications device after the wireless communications device discontinued transmission. The transmission rate for the extended channel allocation may be changed based on the transmission rate control information or based on secondary transmission rate information.
Abstract:
A method in a wireless communication station including receiving frames (310), determining the intended recipient of the frames received (312), buffering frames (314) if required, obtaining information specifying how to decode signals received by the wireless communication station (316), combining frames (318), and decoding the combined frames as specified (320).
Abstract:
A portable communication device (10) is controlled by voice recognition circuitry (20) remote from the portable communication device. The portable communication device includes apparatus for producing and transmitting a parametric representation of voice commands. The remote circuitry (which could possibly be a base station, a mobile repeater, or simply a dedicated box, separate from the portable) produces control signals, responsive to the parametric representation of voice commands, for controlling the portable communication device.

Abstract:
After setting a subscriber unit to a transmit power level (12) which provides a signal at a base site having a target quality level, a fading characteristic of a communication channel between the subscriber unit and a base site is measured (13). The fading characteristic is then compared with threshold values (14). The measuring (13) and comparing (14) are repeated until the fading characteristic crosses a threshold (15, 60, 62). Once the fading characteristic crosses the threshold, the target quality level is set to a new target level (16, 61, 63). A subscriber unit (70) designed to accomplish this method comprises a receiver (72) which receives an RF signal. The received signal is averaged in an averaging device (73) and compared with the original signal in a differential amplifier (74). The output of the comparison is used by a controller (75) to determine power control adjustments to a transmitter (76).
Abstract:
A method for interrupting a radio transmission in a quasi-duplex radio-frequency communication system. The method of the present invention includes the step of transmitting a signal (22), with periodically-occuring holes (24) therein, by a first communicatioin unit (10) to at least a second communication unit (12). The transmitted signal (12) includes an audio information portion (16) and information packets (23). Each information packet (23) specifies the time of occurence of the next hole (24). The second communication unit (12) initiates an interruption of the transmission made by the first communication unit (10) by transmitting an interrupt request signal (31) to the first communication unit (10) at a time specified by an information packet (23) received by the second communication unit (12). When the first communication unit (10) receives the interrupt request signal (31), it processes the interrupt request signal (23) to determine whether it complies with predetermined criteria. If the first communication unit determines that the interrupt request signal complies with the predetermined criteria, it transmits an acknowledgement signal allowing the second communication unit (12) to interrupt the transmission so that the second communication unit (12) may begin transmitting information to be received by at least the first communication unit (10).
Abstract:
Abstract:
A wireless communication infrastructure entity assigns a plurality of schedulable wireless communication entities to a group wherein each entity is assigned a location within the group. The infrastructure entity indicates which of the plurality of schedulable wireless communication entities assigned to the group have been assigned a radio resource, for example in a first bitmap (510), and indicates radio resource allocation policy information (520) and indicates a weighting for each assigned wireless communication entity, for example, in a second bitmap (530), to the schedulable wireless communication entities that have been assigned a radio resource.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method of distinguishing a frame on a channel shared by a plurality of users. A unique identifier can be obtained for each of a set of mobile communication devices (315). A message intended for one of the mobile communication devices can be obtained. The message can be scrambled using a long code generated using a mobile communication device specific long code mask to obtain a scrambled message (335). The unique identifier can be incorporated into the scrambled message for a frame intended for a selected mobile communication device (340). The frame can then be transmitted (350). A radio frequency signal can be received for the frame (405). Demodulation can be performed on the signal to obtain a scrambled signal (415). A unique identifier can be extracted from the scrambled signal (420). The unique identifier extracted from the scrambled signal can be examined to determine if the signal is intended for a mobile communication device (445).
