Abstract:
A wireless communication system having portable communication devices capable of establishing direct terminal-to-terminal communication through another terminal without having a fixed base station. A portable communication device used as a terminal is capable of functioning as a router for other communication devices while maintaining separated communications with another device. Upon registration (904, figure 9), the device searches the device begins the process of communication by discovering other devices (906).
Abstract:
A parasitic antenna element (115) is used with a wireless communication device (100) that includes a housing (501), communication circuitry (103-109), and a first antenna element (117) for intercepting electromagnetic energy and further for coupling electromagnetic energy intercepted by the parasitic antenna element (115) to the communication circuitry (103-109). The parasitic antenna element (115) includes a dielectric substrate (201); and a conductive pattern (202-210) disposed on a surface (805, 905, 1005) of the dielectric substrate (201), whereby when the dielectric substrate (201) is attached to the housing (501) in close proximity to the internal antenna element (117), electromagnetic energy is coupled between the internal antenna element (117) and the conductive pattern (202-210).
Abstract:
A method for a first portable communication device (1102) of a plurality of portable communication devices located in a first cell (1104) of a plurality of cells to establish communication with a second portable communication device (1106) located in a second cell comprises acquiring a third portable communication device (1124) located within a first central region (1112) of the first cell (1104), instructing the third portable communication device to acquire a first set of up to three portable communication devices (1126, 1128, 1130), each located in a different sector (1132, 1134, 1136) of the first cell from each other, and acquiring a second set of up to three portable communication devices (1138, 1140, 1142) located in a first outer region of the first cell, each located in a different sector (1144, 1146, 1148) of the first cell from each other and from the first set of devices. A first message targeted for the second device (1106) is transmitted along with an out-of-cell broadcast request to the third device (1124) and to the second set of devices. The third device is instructed to re-transmit the first message targeted for the second device along with the out-of-cell broadcast request to the first set of devices and the first and second sets of devices are instructed upon reception of the out-of-cell broadcast request to re-transmit the first message to cells adjacent to each of the first and second sets of devices. It is then determined if the second portable communication device (1106) has received the message.
