Abstract: Embodiments relate to order specific expansion of an area that encompasses pickers available for accepting an order placed with an online system. The online system accesses a computer model trained to predict an attractiveness metric for the order and applies the computer model to predict a value of the attractiveness metric for a first order. The online system classifies the first order into a first set or a second set, based on the value of the attractiveness metric and a threshold. Based on the classification, the online system expands over time a size of an area that encompasses a set of pickers available for accepting the first order. The online system causes a device of each picker in the set of available pickers located within the area of the expanded size to display an availability of the first order for acceptance by each picker in the set of available pickers.

Abstract: A machine-learned predictive model is trained to predict potential for customer complaint. The model is part of an online concierge system. The online concierge system accesses a customer order that includes one or more items. The online concierge system determines input data for an item of the one or more items. The online concierge system determines a prediction value associated with potential for customer complaint for the item by applying the machine-learned prediction model to the input data. The online concierge system provides the prediction value to a picker client device associated with a picker who is assigned the item. The picker client device presents an alert to the picker based in part on the prediction value, and the alert includes a message that is customized to mitigate a cause of potential customer complaint for the item.

Abstract: An online concierge system compensates pickers who fulfill orders including one or more items based in part on weights of the items included in an order. Because the online concierge system does not physically possess the items that are obtained, the online concierge system cannot directly weigh the items and weights specified for items in a catalog from a retailer may be inaccurate. To more accurately determine weights of items, the online concierge system trains a weight prediction model to estimate an item's weight from attributes of the item and uses the output of the weight prediction model to determine compensation to a picker. The weight prediction model may output a predicted weight of an item or a classification of the item as heavy or light. Where discrepancies are found between a predicted weight and the catalog weight of an item, additional information about the item is obtained.
