Abstract: Composite bearing materials having markedly reduced wear are obtained by incorporating carbon fibers of high tensile strength and Young''s Modulus in a metal matrix. Advantageously a lamellar solid, for example molybdenum sulfide, may also be added. These materials may be manufactured by depositing metal by an electroless method on chopped carbon fibers and compacting the composite by heat and pressure, alternatively the composite may be compacted by powder metallurgical methods. The lamellar solid, if required, is added before compacting by heat and pressure.

Abstract: At least the contacting surface of a bearing component is a composite material wherein metal coated carbon fibers are incorporated as reinforcement in a matrix of synthetic resin. Such bearing components have low wear rates and show low friction.

Abstract: 1,209,916. Bearings; impregnating permeable materials. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 3 May, 1968 [4 May 1967], No. 20693/67. Heading F2A. [Also in Division C7] A bearing material comprises carbon fibres dispersed in a metal matrix, the fibres forming 12-35% by volume of the material. The metal matrix may be Ag, Ni, Co, Pb or Cu and the material is preferably made either by hot pressing carbon fibres which have been coated with a metal such as Ag, Ni or Co by electroless deposition or by mixing the carbon fibres with a powdered metal such as Pb or Cu and hot pressing the mixture. Other methods mentioned are infiltration of molten metal into fibre mats, electroplating and slip casting. The material may also include graphite or a dichalorgenide of an element in Group VA or VIA e.g. 5-15% by volume of MoS 2 . It may also be impregnated with a liquid lubricant.
