Abstract: Ink droplet sensing apparatus for use in an ink jet printer for detecting errors resulting from the omission or misplacement or from the reduced size of a printed dot. In one embodiment the apparatus includes a membrane (14) having a metallic coating thereon which membrane (14) is placed over one side of an electrode member (10) having an uneven surface. Voltage is applied to the electrode member (10) and the metallic coating and ink droplets (20) impinging on the membrane (14) momentarily deflect the membrane and cause a change of capacitance which in turn causes a voltage change at the electrode member (10). The voltage change is coupled through a capacitor (22) and an amplifier (24) to recognition logic for evaluation of the signals.

Abstract: Dot matrix printer including at least one print head (40) and driving means (54) for causing movement of the print head in side to side direction relative to a record medium (50) movable past the print head so as to enable the print head to print a line on the record medium. Prior art driving systems used for moving a print head in a side to side manner required considerable energy. In the present invention the driving system includes spring means (44, 46) operably connected with the print head and electrodynamic drive means (54) causing the spring means to oscillate at a frequency corresponding with the natural frequency of the assembly of spring means and print head so as to bring about oscillating motion of the print head in side to side direction. This arrangement reduces significantly the energy required for acceleration and deceleration of the print head.

Abstract: Dot matrix printer, such as an ink jet printer, wherein the dots produced by a printing element (20) are optically sensed and the existence, the position, the size and the condition of each dot are determined. The desired printing signals are produced by a character generator (36) and input in a signal shaping circuit (42) and these signals are compared with the actual signals from the optical sensing means (22, 48, 50) and the drive means (34) for the printing element (20) is altered to correct the printing or an alarm signal (54) is produced when the compared signals do not correspond with each other.
