Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display panel which lowers the power consumption by improving luminous efficiency, and also realizing a high display quality. SOLUTION: This plasma display panel has a first glass substrate on which many pairs of electrodes covered by a dielectric layer are mounted, and gas is filled into a gap between the first glass substrate and a second glass substrate set face to face, discharge is generated by applying a voltage to the pairs of electrodes on the first glass substrate, and ultraviolet radiation emitted by the discharge is converted to visible radiation by irradiating a phosphor with it, thereby displaying images. Here at least one side of a discharge region electrodes formed by a pairs of electrodes arranged on a practically flat surface of the first glass substrate is composed of a discharge gap electrode portion, a sheet-like discharge electrode portion, and an opening portion separating these electrode portions, then the sheet-like discharge electrode portion is formed of a plurality of fine lines or an hole-like portions in which the electrodes are not formed.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further improve light emission characteristics, an aging effect and reliability of a color plasma display panel. SOLUTION: In this color plasma display panel, two glass substrates 101, 102 are stuck together separated with first gap (a), and the peripheries of the stuck parts are so sealed as to form a sealed region (the inside region of 303). The sealed region comprises a display region 301 wherein multiple discharge cells are formed and a region for containing an exhaust passage 205 formed outside the display region. The exhaust passage 205 is so formed as to have a second gap (b) larger than the first gap (a) in at least one of the two glass substrates.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve display quality by surely causing writing discharge in a large capacity gas discharge display panel. CONSTITUTION: When writing discharge is performed by line successive scanning in a gas discharge display panel, the panel is controlled so that applying times tpw1 , tpw2 ,... tpw N of writing discharge voltage VS, VD are made different depending on a writing discharge voltage applying time. A long writing time tpw is provided for a discharge cell or a discharge cell block having a long elapse time from a priming discharge finish time. when priming discharge of one time is caused preceding plural writing discharge periods, a long writing discharge voltage applying time is provided for a writing discharge period having a longer elapse time from a priming discharge finish time. Sufficient brightness and display quality is obtained by shortening a writing discharge time.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To secure high light emitting efficiency and to make an easy gradational display achievable, in a gas discharge display element which excites a phosphor in use of ultraviolet light being produced by gas discharge for color emission. CONSTITUTION:In An ac type gas discharge display element having a pair of electrodes 2 with two discharge gaps 101, 102 in one discharge space, two driving methods are available in the following procedures that at a first discharge gap 101, such discharge as having a stable memory function takes place, and at a second discharge gap 102, it is performed by a short pulse voltage using the discharge of the first discharge gap 101 for the pilot, for which this short voltage pulses are superposed and this waveform voltage pulse is impressed, and another method is that a gradational display is secured by changing the effective voltage of the short width pulse.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the light emission efficiency of the gas discharge display element by using an AC pulse voltage consisting of pulses with width which is shorter than the time required for a discharging current to converge in one pulse voltage impressing time and pulses with longer width as an AC pulse voltage to be impressed to an electrode couple for the continuation of discharging. CONSTITUTION:The AC pulse voltage impressed to the electrode couple for the continuous discharging consists of the pulses with width shorter than the time required for the discharging current to converge in one pulse voltage impressing time and pulse with longer width. Consequently, the ultraviolet light emission efficiency of the gas discharge display element is improved without causing a rise in driving voltage nor the instability of driving, and the efficiency of a color gas discharging display element which uses a fluorescent material is improved.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a thin film El element with high luminous efficiency while maintaining the color tone as a red light emitting element by using thin film phosphors activated with Eu on a base material made of a mixed crystal of CaS and CaSe for a light emitting layer. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode 2 and the first insulator layer 3 made of Al2O3 are formed on a glass base 1 by the vacuum deposition method or the like. A light emitting layer 4 is formed by the electron beam heating deposition method with a pellet containing Eu in a mixed crystal of CaS and CaSe of an evaporation source so that the light emitting layer 4 having a base material with the preset Se concentration is formed on this base. The second insulator layer 5 of Al2O3 is formed on the light emitting layer 4 without breaking the vacuum state, and an upper Al electrode 6 is finally formed on the second insulator layer 6. A light emitting layer material of a thin film EL element with good red luminescence and high intensity and efficiency can be obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To manufacture a high brightness, high efficiency, and low voltage driven thin film EL element by using evaporation sources controlled independently, consisting of ZnS, Se, and an activating agent or a compound containing an activating agent, or ZnS, Se containing an activating agent. CONSTITUTION:Interposed layers 10, 12 consisting of ZnS1-xSex and a light emitting layer 11 consisting of ZnS:Mn are formed by using as deposition material sources independently controllable ones, for example, ZnS, Se and Mn deposition sources 5, 6, 4. In this process, the amount of ZnS supplied to a substrate 2 is made such that, when Se and Mn are not supplied, the film forming speed is 300(1)/min, and the evaporation amount is kept constant during the film formation of the interposed layers 10, 12 and the light emitting layer 11. Further, the evaporation amount of Se is varied with a time so that the composition of the interposed layer 10 is ZnS0.05Se0.05 and in the region in contact with the light emitted layer 11 it becomes ZnS. Immediately after the evaporation amount of Se has become zero, the supply of Mn to the substrate 2 is started by a shutter 3 and terminated after the predetermined concentration and film thickness have been achieved.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make it possible to obtain a good luminescence characteristics by ionizing Se or Te and supplying it simultaneously in film formation of a luminous layer by vacuum deposition for a thin film electro-luminescence element including a luminous layer consisting of matrix of ZnS. CONSTITUTION:In forming a thin film of a luminous layer on a substrate 1, Se or Te is vaporized from a separate source from that of ZnS material and supplied to the substrate 1 simultaneously. That is, the substrate 1 is provided heated by a substrate heater 2 in a film forming vacuum tank 7, and pellets 4 of ZnS: Mn including Mn, for example, are vaporized by electron beam heating from an electron beam gun 3. From a separate deposition source 5 of Se, for example, Se is vaporized simultaneously by resistance heating by means of a heater, so a thin film of a luminous layer of ZnS: Mn is formed on the substrate 1. Removal of S at the time of forming the luminous layer is thus compensated effectively, and a good luminescence characteristics can be obtained.
