Abstract: A mass spectrometer of the type wherein the sample is ionized, excited into resonance, and detected within a generally homogeneous magnetic field generated by a coil (1). During detection, the magnetic field is perturbed by coils (3) or ferromagnetic rings or disks (11) to form magnetic mirror regions (4) to contain the ions. Prior to detection, the ions may be contained by conventional electrostatic trapping plates (10) or by magnetic mirror regions (4).
