The present invention may relate to provision of a mechanism to join together the various substrate layers of a flexible display with optically clear adhesives that permit improved flexibility of the substrate layer stack and may also optically guide images to locations on a display surface that are not aligned with the display layer of a substrate layer stack. Embodiments of the present invention may provide for an improved user interface which may include enhanced flexibility and enhanced optical characteristics.

A structure 11 to protect a component 2 such as an OLED display or photovoltaic cell from contaminants comprises an encapsulated portion 13 configured to receive at least one component 2, which comprises at least one barrier wall 7. A source of gas 3 is provided within the encapsulated portion to cause a net flow of gas 4 through the barrier walls from inside the encapsulated portion to outside the encapsulated portion. The source of gas may be a layer (Fig. 2: 6) formed between two component layers 2. The source of gas may comprise an adhesive including dissolved gas, a material which forms gaseous products as it degrades such as low melting point hygroscopic solid hexanediol which emits a gaseous diol, or nanoporous material for example. The encapsulated portion may be formed at temperatures lower than ambient, or under increased pressure.
